wrx getting a wobble on

hey all, i'm new to the subaru front as i've always had a thing for nissans, i recently bought a 2001 bugeye wrx uk spec impreza, and since i've had it its been nothing but problems lol, firstly the centre diff gave up, had it repaired, then the clutch was giving me grief, the list goes on, ANYWAYS.....i'm at my wits end, i recently changed the 2 front tyres as they were close to being slicks, and whilst driving it home once you get up to 3rd gear the whole car starts to judder, i've been told so many different things that it is/could be, and i'm really hoping its not the gearbox giving up, i don't drive it particularly hard either, someone suggested i change the rear tyres to match the front ones as there could be a large gap in the tread depth between the front and rear tyres?

any info, suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Morning, and welcome to SNet.
Has it started immediately after the tyre change??

If so, take it back and ask them to re-check the balance.

Can you provide a bit more info mate.
Like - does it judder when you accelerate hard, or is it all the time you're in 3rd?
Does the judder disappear once you get past a certain rev range?
And...as above, has this only surfaced since you had the new tyres fitted?

This could be all manner of things.
I had judder and hesitation on mine - I would floor it, the car would surge forward and then power would drop and the car juddered - like having a flat spot - for me it was spark plugs. I changed mine and haven't had a problem since; they're a bugger to get at but it is a DIY job if you're fairly confident in your abilities.

It will all depend on how well your car has been looked after in the past - as you're learning, these can quickly become money pits if the car hasn't been maintained well.

Tyre tread difference between front and back won't be anywhere near noticeable enough to make the whole car judder - I've had tyres close to slicks on the front and tread on the back - never had this behaviour.

Then I would be checking the underside for loose bolts on the recent work done, mounts, prop shaft, diff etc. The sooner the better as if it is some thing related and it lets go you could be in serious bother. :nono:

was the car ok before you got tyres fitted if so it has got to be his balancing machine that is wrong try getting them checked at another tyre garage

Nope - if the wheel bearing was going you'd have plenty of warning beforehand - wheel bearing is way OTT diagnosis - I've had two go, neither matches these symptoms IMHO.

All good points.

Hey everyone quick update, it turns out that the problem was tyre related, it turned out that the off side rear tyre had a vast amount more tread than the near side one, changed both, and the problem is now gone!!!! hooray, now the car is up for sale
