20 years ago tonight..

...was the start of Gulf War 1. (actual date was 17th Jan, but the day was a Sunday)

I remember it vividly - fell asleep in front of the TV only to be woken by the sound of bombs. (on the news, that is).

GlesgaKiss 16 January 2011 11:08 PM

I would have been 3! Obviously don't remember anything about it, but, as always, feel for the people that had to go over there. Quite lucky to have been born in this country when you think about it, totally safe and secure at that age. Plenty of other kids around the world not as fortunate.

joz8968 16 January 2011 11:21 PM

Yeah, remember it.

I was 22 and pretty much exactly midway through the 6yr 11 month (not quite 'the 7 year itch', ha!) relationship my bird of the time.

I remember it as I was on guard duty at the radar base in Episkopi when the first sortie from Rhiyad took off.

And I think you have got your dates wrong! it all kicked off on Wednesday 16th at 23:30 GMT.

That'll be Wikipedia for you!

I was doing an instructional tour on the Tornado at the time so was not involved directly. We did have a lot of extra duties because of the others who went off to war.

We also had to do round the clock stints at RAF Akrotiri loading VC10s with pallets of 6 x 1000 lb bombs :D They were disgusting as they were all coverd in some green antistatic slime. Didin't stop us leaving messages to Sadaam on them though :D
