whats the difference with a uprated paddle clutch?
 

I am getting a new clucth as seems i am getting a new everything as most will have seen all my latest posts (damn headgasket)

i can get a 6 speed uprated paddle clutch or a standard clutch, i can get a good deal on both but the paddle clutch is near £100 more, whats the difference between the two? and for standard road use is it worth paying for?

i am confident 99.9999 percent of this forum have alot more knowlegde about this than i do so any vague ideas would be a great help.

seems everyone knows about as much as me about this. no worries

all i can say from friends who have had paddle clutchs are they are not ideal for daily driving, and don't last 5 mins in stop/start traffic,

also depending if you are going to be running huge hp on the clutch does it warrent such a kit

just had a email saying that any clutch will fit regardless i just cant see how, surely there is a difference between the 5 speed and the 6 speed clutches?

Do you have a 5 speed then:wonder: Also I would not buy that so called uprated clutch off of ebay, I've had one off techniclutch before and wasn't happy when it turned up, Looked very cheaply made and lasted about 2 months, Alot of others have had similar problems so wasn't just bad luck :( May be ok with standard power but don't let the painted pressure plate fool you, A genuine standard exedy would do the job better and is cheaper :thumb:

when yours went after 2 months didnt you have a standard 12 month warranty?

Sorry, The 6 speed is dearer :brickwall But in my experience the £60-£80 you save buying that clutch could end up costing you another £260 or so when the cheap one fails :cry: Not trying to make yo spend your hard earned cash mate but do a quick Google on Techniclutch and you will see what I'm talking about :thumb:

I emailed someone and they offered me the speed 6 speed clutch for £110 which is really good price but i dont wanna be changing it after 2 months even if i do have 2 year warranty as cost so much to change it

you would be better off buying a exedy other standard or uprated then the techniclutch,
Lateral performance or API should be able to sort you out.

i just havent got the £300 for a exedy at the moment, my clutch hasnt even gone yet i just have the engine out to do the gasket so thought i may aswell replace at the same time. my clutch is about 70 percent worn at the moment

I know how you feel, Although when I purchased the one off Techniclutch I thought it was an Upgrade rather than a necessity :brickwall Was Gutted when it went but I had the fortune of fitting it and removing it myself and not having to pay another, Even if you are lucky enough to get them to honour the warranty they will not pay labour costs, I got asked for proof of fitting and proof of power :razz: I didn't even reply to that message and just bought a proper clutch, I would not of commented but after reading on the internet it seems that it was not just bad luck and that the company has a history of supplying cheap inferior clutches and I have also read that the genuine AP kits they supply are an AP plate with cheap pressure plate, Bit besides the point of having one in my opinion :cuckoo: Can't comment on that other clutch/company I'm afraid, They might be a genuine company selling genuine clutches, It's very difficult to tell with Ebay I'm afraid :thumb:

i know what you mean mate ebay is always a risk, just thought for £110 quid for a 6 speed clutch it was worth the risk as spent near £1300 on the headgasket. i just cant stretch to £260 plus delivery and as its 70 percent warn i think its best to get it done.

but as you said if i get a cheap one and it lasts 2 months i am back to square one

thats basically the one i can get just without the flywheel and its only £110

Just buy a genuine friction disc off me for the regular original 6 speed. That's all you need and those cheap clutches can stay where they belong on a shelf or on someone else's car.

i told my garage i was doing this and he said he doesnt recommend this and doesnt want to comment on what will happen, sounds risky but everyone seems to trust API and i have no reason not too and they obviously know subaru.

Thanks for your custom. You shouldn't get a judder from the new disc, but it depends entirely upon the condition of the bits that you are re-using.

It is a brand new Exedy centre plate, never been fitted to a car.

been persuaded by my garage to get the whole thing as he was very concerned, i have seen it at aztec for £260. really sorry to dave for messing you around and you were a big help but people in my ear were saying it would only last a year if i dont replace the whole thing and i cant take that risk as labour is so expensive. i may decide to sleep on it before spending the money. dave you if get to a computer can you PM me. i tried to call but you had left and i wanted to ask you afew things before i spent the cash as i will take your word for things but as you were not available i have been listening to my garage.

I just wanted to know as my other parts are apparantly not in the best condition how long would you feel the replacement drive plate would last?

I am keeping the car for atleast 18 months and do about 6k a year.

It won't be the same as mine. I have no idea where Aztec gets his clutches from. BUT I do know that they are not ours, as we source ours directly through APi Japan.

There are lots of nasty Chinese copies out there in what look like Exedy boxes...............

Had quite a few parts off of them and never had any problems, If you never noticed any problems with the clutch beforehand then I personally would have no qualms about fitting just the clutch plate you were offered, From what I have read you wouldn't know if your mechanic hadn't told you, Also it is impossible to estimate how long parts are going to last, A year is a long time to be quoting if you think something needs replacing :wonder: It can't be that bad if he thinks it will last that long, Others will disagree with me though and it is your decision mate, Just know what it's like when your trying to save a bit of cash :thumb:
