Intercooler upgrade for classic

Hello does anybody know what's the best top mount intercooler upgrade for a v2 classic? I've looked around and can't seem to find any, don't want to go fmic yet as that would need a mappable ecu and remap

Is it a straight swap over? Are there any benefits to this one over the standard jap one?

jura11 13 January 2011 11:35 PM

Hi matey i will recommend you New Age STi V7-V9 TMIC,much better and good for 400BHP.
And here is guide, how to fit http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.p...ntoMY00Classic
Its not straight swap, but with little modification will be very effective.

If anyone can confirm these are a straight swap without modification and are more beneficial
over wrx stock will have one off you

brownstain85 14 January 2011 12:15 AM

No worries, I think they are, I was Gunna put one on my RA but decided to restore it back to standard, if u pm me ur number I can send u a pic of one, it's a bit tatty but the other one we got looks new, both the same

On ver 1 and 2 cars with slanted intercooler top mounts, none of the STi TMIC conversions are straight swaps.
At the very least be prepared to do a pannel beating job on your bulkhead.
You need to be prepared to fabricate or adapt brackets and subject to which TMIC you need modifications to your ICVS etc.
The gains from an STi5 or 6 top mount don't warrant the effort IMHO and the STi 8 topmount is a lot of work, more than fitting an FMIC and a lot less efficient if you go for the right FMIC.
To get reasonable gains from the STi * TMIC you also need the bonnet scoop and under tray.

i have a version 6 i think it is lol, was a mission but the cooler cost me 20 quid and the fabrication and brackets were free so the 5 hours it took to fit i didn't mind and it looks soooo much better than the slanty and i am not a fan of fmic as i am not going for massive horses

As Harvey says...............an efficient, made for the job, FMIC is a lot less work and much quicker to fit than a bigger TMIC (especially if you drop the car off at Havey's LOL)

thanks for the help, will stick with the current top mount and will maybe go the fmic route later

A front mount is less "hassle",well some of them are, depends which you buy i guess LOL,but,i opted for the 2003 TMIC on my 95 wrx as the cost involved with a TMIC was alot cheaper than the front mount, when you warrant in the new ECU/remap etc etc

From

Attachment 54800

To

Attachment 54801

with the 2003 undertray adapted to suit the classic bonnet/mounting holes

Attachment 54802

and of course, the scoop to suit LOL

Attachment 54803

This is the bit (pic borrowed from the net) i had to "manipulate" to get the TMIC to sit properly and not hit/rub/vibrate when engine moved etc

Attachment 54804

As said, there is alot involved to get it to fit, where the dumpvalve goes on the TMIC is welded, but you can get cover plates instead, which is easier/cheaper.

The throttle body has also been shortened, where the outlet meets the TMIC to allow fitment as it would be very very tight against the bulkhead

If thats not put you off,go for it LOL :thumb:

Why not get it refurbished? A lot better option.

NOSSY_89 01 September 2022 10:55 AM

Thats not that bad at all. Get 2 toothpicks and straighten up the bent fins then a coat of paint. Speak to @domino46 he has refurbed loads. There was a topic on here some time ago.

domino46 01 September 2022 12:43 PM

iv done a few over the years but not sure that one is a diy job ,,, there are company's that will rebuild them at the cost of around £500 ish
