£8-£18 for tyre fitting. Why?
I am looking around for a tyre fitter at the moment in/near Keighley and have found quotes that range from £8 to £18 per corner including all the extras such as balancing, disposal and new valves. But why the difference?
Am I missing something here, I mean isnt changing a tyre changing a tyre wherever you go or do you get something for paying extra? I have received an email back from one company stating that they use state of the art Italian machinery! Is that something to be impressed with, for example will their fit be better, with better symmetry (made that bit up) compared to the other guy down the road doing it for £8? :wonder: |
differences in machinery, disposal costs vary, labour costs vary, profit marins vary etc etc
£18 per corner does seem pretty steep though |
Thanks for that. Im not interested as I customer what they pay staff, their profit margins etc, but I am interested in "differences in machinery". Do some machines do a better job than others?
|
no, a balanced wheel is a balanced wheel at the end of the day, doesnt matter if its a new or old machine that does it aslong as its correct
Kwick Fit charge 22.50 a corner ! |
some may take bigger rims etc, but at the day, if the fitter is sh*t then they are more likey bugger your rim
|
Ok thanks. I just didnt want to take it to a £8 place and find it covered in scratches and with wheel wobble on the way home.
Kwik fit are ridiculous. Nothing more to say. |
i am a tyre fitter by trade car lorrys etc etc
normally where i work a ,valve, balance, scrap of old tyre is 11.50 inc vat but when we were allowed there was a fitting charge of a cop (customers own property ) depending on size of rubber . but now due to the company and internal h+s we cant fit other ppls tyres any more i would say 10-13 quid is fair for fitting a tyre to a alloy wheel inc vat some peeps down here have been quoted up too 25 quid per wheel by indpendants around here |

It's about 8 pound in most places in Birmingham. Some people charge more so you purchase the tyre from them and it seems a prettier price. Over 18" is always more I've found so minimum £10 a corner
|
I took a brand new 17" wheel and brand new tyre to our local garage.
They put it on the rim and balanced it...... £20.50 :cuckoo: It took all of 8 minutes.............bloody rip off! |
Buy your tyres locally, they will do the fitting etc for virtually nowt. Profit from the tyres.
My local Kingsway Tyres is never beaten on price. |
Tried that. I sent them an email asking if I bought four new tyres can you fit them included in the price. I didnt expect them to say yes but I did expect them to say "we'll do it for half price" or something similar. They just replied saying "no" full price for 4 x the price of a single one and full price for fitting. I then email them as they say that they will price match and showed them a competitor that was £1.50 cheaper/tyre. So a total of £6 off the tyres and paying full price for fitting. I got no reply.
Now is it me or is that a bit stupid. They have lost a potential local customer as I am now going to get it shipped from 200miles away and get it fitted by someone else. |
Alot the big company's won't fit just tyres as there's more profit in it for them as they have bigger overheads and if they do, you can be charge £20 - £25 per tyre.
There's a company called Etyres, they have all their machines in the back of their Van but they also add a Call Out Charge which works out to £23.50 per tyre. I'm a tyre fitter and it all depends on th wheels, I normally charge £10.00 per tyre but if someone is wanting 4x done and their easy enough wheels then I'd do the last one for free. 22" Rims I don't take less than £20.00 per tyre - £15.00 each if getting 4x but here's a question, I've seen alot of tyre fitters putting masking tape around the alloy, why is this? |
if a customer buys tyres from me i charge £7 which is included in the price , includes , valve , balance and disposal
if someone brings there own tyres to be fitted that they have bought elsewhere i can technically charge them what ever i want .... i dont , i normally charge between 10-15 a wheel dependant on size or type of car . i know alot of garages near me wont fit tyres bought elsewhere, 1 . because it is taking a little bit of the piss and 2. they may lose other PROPER customers while doing the job . so the cheap tyres that you buy online MAY end up costing you more than if you had them bought and fitted at a retailer . think of it like that. i had a customer the other day buy tyres from camskills and after the price of fitting he was £25 worse off than if he had bought them from me direct , and he told me he had spent half the day trawling around shops looking for someone to fit ! i have had people also bring 4 tyres in for me to fit and then moaned when i told them £40 .. i emagined they moaned even more after i told them to f*ck off then and find somewhere else to do it :D anyways £10-15 is the average charge if you bring your own tyres and as alcazar said if you buy them from a local retailer the fitting charge will probably be minimal to nowt mags:thumb: |
Find the workshop manager at your Kwik Fit, get to know him, point out that you don't need a receipt, and ask him when it's convenient to do the work.
And when you pay him, add a £5 for a pint. dunx P.S. Four tyres fitted, balanced and filled with N2 for £50 and not a mark on my lovely OZ's... |
kwik fit ????:D

considering the machine costs 2k for runflat machine to purchase i think that 10 to 15 quid is a fair price
track tyres are a total **** to fit, couldnt do it at my works tyre machine so had to see someone else who had a 3rd hand on his machine for runflat tyres and he still struggled to get the ****er off |
Yeah Runflats are a pain to fit but remember it's all to do with technique to remove and fit these as for removing the tyre you shouldn't need the 3rd arm but does make the job hell bit more easyer
