Which engine? Want fully closed
Hello all
Posting this on behalf of my dad who has a V4 Sti. He needs a new engine but has been quoted approx £5k once simtec and various other parts have been included. He is trying to keep cost as low as possible. Not by buying cheap, just not buying things he doesn't need. My main question is will a fully closed deck block from a version 4 RA work without changing the ECU. If it will, where can i get one from someone that can be trusted. Also, maybe with someone who can also fit it. What sort of price for the engine? And the fitting? He already has all the ancillaries. I'm trying to push him towards the FCD as i've found lots of posts stating it's much stronger and can handle more power. Thanks in advance - |
if not intending modding it beyond standard turbo then no need to worry about closed deck block etc.
whats broken on current engine and why can it not be rebuilt? Simon |
Were the Version 4's not semi closed deck or even open decked?

The original engine blew, i think the crank and piston 3 went. It was replaced by a so say rally expert with forged pistons, acl bearings etc... Simon... He wants something he can rely on and has the ability to adapt at a later date. He wants something he can take on a 300 mile trip and not be scared it'll go pop. Or even worse leave my heavy footed mum stuck in Sainsburys with fluid and steam coming out everywhere. Any ideas on prices, or where? |
Why do people think its the block that causes issues when its actually more like a combination of internals and has nothing what so ever to do with what block is in there.
The ODB can run 500+bhp proven, its pretty strong, if you ever got a classic to run that it would be the least of your worries (like the rest of the car would need upgrading :lol1: ) stick with the odb if its in good condition and uprate the parts (oil pump, rods, pistons etc) as this is where your problems lie ;) Tony:) |

A version 4 STI would have an open deck block. Tony:) |
Thanks Tony.
You seem like someone who knows what he is on about. So what is the benefit/difference between open, semi closed and closed deck? |
Google it.
There's some decent photos and explanations etc. When you find out, you'll 'get it'... ;) |
