Underseat mounted active sub?
 

I'm sure I saw a post about one of these recently, Ripspeed?

I can't find either the post or what the op was talking about on the Halfords site.

Supposed to be a cheaper option?

I'm not into earth shattering bass, but would like a bit more with my fronts, the rear 6x9's are fine, but are mostly turned down.

The ripspeed one hasn't been listed in the halfords website for quite a while as I was thinking about one. Alpine also make one I think but it is about 3 or 4 times the price of the old ripspeed one:?

Got an original Subaru one here, its from my 1995/96 import.
Was under the passenger seat and I was like WTF is this lol.

It's passive so you either need a separate amp or hope that the head-unit has enough power to drive it:?

Personally I would be looking for an active one although it will need a power feed from the stereo.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I'm loath to buy without hearing.

I'd go into Halfords like I do usually, and listen before buying, but their stuff starts at £150 and tbh, I just don't listen to music enough to spend that sort of dosh.

I have one under my pasengers seat, have not really looked at it yet as I only just got the car. It has a control which the original owner stuck to the side of the dash, you can adjust the amount of bass up and down and also asjust some sort of frequency? It says pioneer on the control and does sound pretty good, good enough for me anyway.

My headunit is a Sony GT300, I've noticed that when you go into "Menu" there is a control for "Sub-out".

Does this mean I can run an unpowered one?

I'm NOT after the kiddies boom-box sounds, just a bit more bass to help out my fronts which are 17cm Sony three-ways.

Probably controls a pre-out (pre-amplified line level outputs) phono on the back.

A high-end Head unit will usually have six phono pre-amp outputs on the back for connection to amplifers: Front L-R, Rear L-R and Sub L-R. The option in the menu probably controls the gain on the latter connector.

(well thats what it does on mine, as well as controlling reverse phase and cross-over frequencies :) )

Generally that is a third phono output in the rear to feed a signal to an amp that powers the sub. Technically it would plug into a passive sub, but unless there is something specific that states otherwise it will be nothing more than a signal feed and would lack the power to drive an un-amplified sub.

The manual specifically mentions an active sub.

I also have a Sony headunit, but the sub I have has a fused cable running from the battery to it must need its own power supply.

Is a nice sound, not too much and the control varies the noise a lot, you can pretty much turn it off.

Hmmmmmm, I need to do more research. What DOESN'T help is the lack of ACTUAL bass/treble controls ANYWHERE on the headunit, just some silly equalizer thingy.

Even the cheapy Panasonic one in the Xantia can have it's bass and treble altered.

The price of having a fancy head unit, I'm afraid. Even fancier ones will be able adjust the cut off freqencency, boost and roll off rates for each frequency band. :freak3:

Those takes ALOT of fiddling to perfect.....and gets erased everytime the battery goes flat/disconected (I've written it down since).

I think I may well have the same headunit as mine only has some sort of EQ thing on it to adjust as well.

The sub control says Pioneer on it, never got a chance today but will take some pics tomorrow, having put my hand under the seat it is not very big at all from what I can tell and seems to be in a metal case.

I had some bigger ICE units when I was younger but have to admit that this is more enough for me now, best thing is that you can turn it off when you do not want the bass, which for me is great.

fit a set of good quality 6x9's under rear shelf with a bit of work the y fit and u can retain original shelf, fit a small 2 channel amp to drive them or a 4 channel to drive all speakers , i have done this and sounds great no booming just goos strong full range sound.....

I already HAVE 6x9's uner the rear parcel shelf, and am satisfied with the sound with them on.

It's just that I like the sound more at the front of the car and the bass needs a bit of help.

Yeah no what you mean, I had some really good components from another car, tried putting in door but way to big. So made up a bracket that holds both the speaker and tweeter, but its all at the back.

I have now amped both front and rears and still quite loud from back. But i need just a tad bit more bass, and it'll sound awsome.
