JDM STI gauge cluster doesn't sweep!?!?

Fellas, i realised that my gauge cluster doesn't sweep on start up anymore!:(:wonder:

I'm not sure if any of you have experienced this before, but the it's an almost new 07 Spec C with only 3k+ miles.

I first noticed it yesterday, but thought it's one of those electrical glitches and thought nothing of it, but today i've tried it many times, it has stopped sweeping.

Any ideas?

Suberman 05 January 2011 05:23 PM

Update:

I looked through the 06-07 owners' manual, and it did state that it's possible to cancel the sweep. Subaru calls it 'sequential illumination' The steps in the 06-07 manual (Euro spec) is as follows:

With ignition in 'ON' hold down trip meter knob and turn 'REV' shift light knob left or right to change settings between 'ON' or '_ _'

I did the above steps but doesn't seem to do anything. I can only change around the settings for the shift light and buzzer, which is just twisting the REV knob left or right.

I do have a JDM owners' manual, but it's in Japanese and i'm not sure if there is something about the sweep.

Do you have the ignition ON two clicks? ie: all the warning lights lit up?

It could also be a fuse. Defis can refuse to do this if the permanent live goes off.

MelTypeR 05 January 2011 10:27 PM

Suberman,

My spec C also has the same where as my clocks dont sweep?!?!?
Have searched all over the net to see how to turn it back but to no avail.

Its a pity as i also have defis fitted which sweep round very nicely!

I just always put it down to me having a Simtek fitted?.

If you found out how to do it please let me know.

Mel

my rev counter dont sweep or move whatsoever. 35k on car fcuking great news

Cannon Fodder 05 January 2011 10:39 PM

I'm not sure if my MY04 Spec C should do a sweep as well but I have never seen it do one if it does. :wonder:

I'd be interested to know if it should perform this function as well, and if so how do I enable it? :wonder:

Shaun 05 January 2011 10:52 PM

AFAIK it is only the MY05 (wide track) > ones that did the sweep. My 03 Spec C did not.

The sweep is programmable on the clocks themselves and nothing to do with the ECU AFAIK.

Oh well, what you've never had you'll never miss. :lol1:

Yes, ignition to 'ON'. 2 clicks from 'LOCK'

Fuse? Any idea which one to look for?:wonder:

Hi Mel,

I have the same Spec C as yours (hawkeye).

Did yours ever sweep? Or has it been like that all along?

Do you have the JDM owners manual? I do. But it's all in Japanese.:brickwall There is a page that seem to explain the REV alarm shift light and possibly the sweep on start up as well. I'll try to get it translated. Let you know later.

Mate, what year is your car? Did it ever sweep? Mine only has 3k+ miles. Imagine how i feel. :lol1::brickwall

Ty, did your S202 have the start up sweep?

Hi Shaun, yes i think only MY05 and later has the sweep function. And i've gone through the owners' manual (english version) for the 06-07 hawkeye Impreza and it does state that it should sweep and like you said, you can disable it on the clocks.

Suberman 06 January 2011 01:53 AM

Fellas, it got my wondering if the Spec Cs don't come with this function. But it does.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MefNAX2gGyo

So, looks like there is something to it. :Suspiciou:wonder::mad:

DoZZa 06 January 2011 01:57 AM

My Hawkeye Spec C does not sweep, well at least it hasn't since I've owned it.

But its strange that your one (Suberman) did it, but now does not.

Would be nice to have the sweep to match the Defi's.

DoZZa 06 January 2011 01:59 AM

Maybe try holding down the trip meter knob with the ignition OFF and then turn ON?

I will have a go at it tomorrow.

Ok, now to add to the confusion.:lol1: I can't confirm 100% if it did sweep before or not. Because i seldom drive the car, it's a weekend only car for now. So, i'm not really sure now.

But as i've posted the youtube link. An 07 STI Spec C does have the sweep function as seen.:Suspiciou

I tried holding the trip meter knob, but that just reset the trip meter.

mines a 52 reg sti8 twin scroll it has always sweeped but now the middle one is none responsive.....faulty speedo converter?

MelTypeR 06 January 2011 08:52 AM

Lol some of you are up way too late!! :D

Mine has never done the sweep, but i did a bit of research on the net last night and couldn't find anything to show how to enable it or even if the function is available at all on the later spec C's??

Maybe subaru took the weight saving to a bit of an extreme by removing this function! :D:D

On a side note, does anyone know where i can get a new front windscreen for a Spec C, as it thinner then the glass on a uk/eu spec car.

Mel

Mel i agree that Subaru took the weight saving abit too seriously. The paint from the factory is only on average 70-90 mills thick!:cuckoo::eek:

Coming back to the gauges, the Spec C does have this function. See here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MefNAX2gGyo

So it's clearly built in, but what how the hell do you enable it or whats going on with ours? :wonder:

I'd becareful when buying parts for the Spec C. Make sure the part is correct or you may end up with a semi Spec C.:lol1: Cross reference the part #s if you can. Dozza has posted a link somewhere to extract part #s for all Subaru models. Alternatively, get the parts from Japanparts.com:thumb: Look for Yuki San.

MelTypeR 06 January 2011 09:19 AM

Yeah i took a look at that link too just now, maybe we need a Spec C owner on here to confirm whether they have the function enabled on theres?
As so far all hawkeye Spec c owners have said that theres doesnt do it either?

As for trying to activate the function via the trip button, all i ended up doing was to reset the trip function or adjust the rev alarm, cant see how else you can do it?

Might give Iain Litchfield a call as i know he can import them aswell, as japan parts can be quite expensive to buy from.

No the S202 didn't have the sweep function, as it was the last of the Bugeyes it had the standard/non Defi type instrument cluster. :)

Cannon Fodder 06 January 2011 09:50 AM

As a side note I was in a MY03 JDM STi on Sunday night and that had the sweep function, outside temp display and a few other things that my MY04 Spec C doesn't have. :cuckoo:

I mean taking the weight saving down to the slight weight difference of a slightly heavier display, an extra bit of loom and a temp sensor does seem a little bit too much like OCD.

Suberman 06 January 2011 11:04 AM

Chaps, i'm most certain that Spec Cs do come with this function. Just checkout the facetube link few posts up.

It is strange that so far all the Spec C owners are reporting that they don't get the sweep function.

I'm starting to wonder if my Spec C ever did that from day one. :wonder: I can't remember as i drive my hatch daily.

I just went through the owners' manual of the hatch STI, followed the steps to disable the sweep function and viola! It's that easy really. I can disable or enable the sweep function on the hatch STI at will.

I just cannot figure out how to do it on the JDM!

gussy 06 January 2011 12:52 PM

You can enable the clocks to sweep.Ian Litchfield I belive has done it on a few cars but it costs My hawkeye spec-c RA btw does not sweep either.

rickya 06 January 2011 01:48 PM

My Hawkeye Spec C never sweeped but after reading threads I once started faffing about with the speedo reset button on the dash clocks while turning on ignition. Somehow I managed to make it sweep once upon startup but after I turned off ignition it didn't happen again?? But I reckon there is a way to turn it on permanently.

AdamNI 06 January 2011 03:45 PM

Just to add another voice. My hawkeye spec c doesn't sweep either. I just assumed it was broke when i got the car.

Although one difference i noted between my old 05 blob type uk sti, when you adjusted the rpm limiter function for the light and buzzer on the uk car, you do it by the digital display on the left, the rev counter doesn't move, (the 05 blob ones don't sweep on uk cars). However on the spec c, the rpm counter needle actually moves as you change the value. So it must have the ability to sweep, as i presume it works by some sort of stepper motor, it's probably just deactivated.

micky 06 January 2011 03:47 PM

my 56 plate sweeps and always has.

mike80 06 January 2011 04:19 PM

My hawkeye spec c does not do the sweep either, the youtube link may not be a spec c :Suspiciou

Athame1 06 January 2011 04:41 PM

My blob sti uk 05 does not sweep, but manual says it does and how to do it. But I can not get it to sweep.

Just resets mileage and moves rev buzzer.
