Anyone recommend a half decent winter jacket?
 

I was in town today and came across a few winter jackets in the sales, although most seemed to be "small" size so probably just getting rid of stock. Anyhow, I could do with a half decent winter jacket but not really sure whats good and not so good.

To me it would seem you can spend well over £100 on one that doesn't even seem as thick as the jumper im wearing, lol.

So, any of you into your outdoors stuff and could recommend any? I'm not looking to spend loads, some I have seen in Milets and Blacks should have been well over £100 but were down to £50, £60, £70 etc, but mostly seemed to be North Face and Berghaus?

The Bear Grylls range is very good, i have one of the fleeces.

What is a winter jacket?

Something to look smart over a shirt and tie/suit jacket?
Ski Jacket?
Waterproof/Gore Tex?

cant go wrong with north face mate or snugpak(softie) for wormth if your looking for more weather proof stuff sprayway,berghaus and north face again mate or abit of an all rouder is crag hopper aqua dry its a water proof fleece

As has already been stated it depends on application.

With temperatures at -12 here just over a week ago, I put my Paramo Analogy kit to the test in the snow - 3 hours in those temperatures the only part feeling cold was my face.

Totally useless though if it is something you are wanting to wear over a suit for example, although it would keep you dry.

Get a ski jacket. They're designed to keep you warm and with all the different styles you're bound to find one that *you think* looks good on you.

Try TKMaxx for a discounted one. I like my North Face Triclimate for posey quality, but Trespass is good for the money you're talking about. Make sure you don't just buy a shell unless you have a fleece or other midlayer to go with it!

The reason why you say these jackets are no thicker than a jumper lol is because they are what's called Hardshell jackets and are designed to be worn as part of a layering system,so underneath a hardshell you would have a fleece(insulation layer)then a base layer,something like coolmax t shirt is to be worn next to the skin to absorb moisture/sweat and evaporate it away from the body..Then you have a fleece which can be a further insulation,for example polartec,windstopper.Then is the the outer shell/hardshell,to keep out rain,snow,wind...Gore-tex,Aqua-dry,Dri-lite..Myself just for dossing around or for going running,cycling,i use a softshell rather than a hardshell or i use packlite,because softshell are more flexible and better for moving around doing activities,but they are not as waterproof as a hardshell,softshell are ok for say lite rain drizzle,but for anything heavy rain then you need a hardshell.In this cold weather lately i have gone out in my softshell with just a t shirt underneath and been warm,i find them better as windstopper than a normal fleece...

Sorry, I guess I should have been a little bit more specific on my "requirements".......

Basically the only jacket I have at the moment which is worth wearing in the current weather (for warmth) is not water proof and I have had it a year or two now so thought it's about time I get something that will keep the water and wind out.

I don't go hiking/climbing mountains etc, I just want something warm, but don't want to have to put a couple of extra layers on first before I put a "thin" jacket on.

The craghoppers will do you then,nice jacket actually wish i hadn't seen it now i'm tempted myself,it's Aquadry so waterproof and breathable,micro fleece on the inside to help keep warm...

Sadly, there's not many 'all in one' solutions jacket wise any more.

As someone mentioned above, it's all about layers these days.

Saying that though, I bought a North Face McMurdo (as someone else has suggested here) and it was fantastic. Ridiculously warm - 550 down fill - with a water proof and breathable outer.

Not cheap, but you do get what you pay for. I bought it to go to Chicago over Christmas where it was bloody cold and it kept me proper toasty.

The other option I looked at was a North Face down tri-climate. Very similar jacket, but the down inner was removable.
