Hi All,
my first ever scoobie (standard MY02 WRX) arrives from Holland next week and I'm fit to bust with excitement. I've wanted one for ages and the eight-month import wait from the dealership wasn't fun. I've been reading a lot of the threads here and mainstream literature (eg. EVO mag) and have seen lots about the relatively disappointing performance of the new WRXs. As a complete Scoobie novice can anyone suggest the first performance related mods I might consider making to get this thing up to speed (nothing ridiculous, just back with the old Turbo speed or slightly better). I'm paying aroung 2 grand insurance so mods can't be too extensive!! thanks DaveR |
De cat the xorst, Prob HKS your best bet and a Quikshift induction kit from quikshift racing.
|
Prodrive PPP - it transforms the car. Not sure on the warranty side tho.
But I would say that :D David |
De-catting newer shape scoobs has its problems (mainly with the sensors as you get the engine check light come on) but would go for a PPP if you can get one, if not then exhaust from downpipe back will do to start with, much more than that i would go for a brake upgrade kit (try the Godspeed 335mm 4 pot kit) or an AP racing or Brembo kit.
Induction kits are available, K&N seem to be liked by most people, or you can replace your air filter with an ITG type, (none goo one that naffs your MAF). Check out a couple of sites that sell exhausts and other bits, one is www.Scoobymania.co.uk and another is www.Scoobysport.co.uk. Happy shopping :D Tony:D |
Tony - what acual difference does changing the zorst from the downpipe back actually make? I know Scoobysport around 240 bhp (similar to PPP) but don't know if this is for back system from d/p back or full system?

good luck when you get your new scoobie, have fun.

Just enjoy it and don't read to much into reviews that say it's pants. I have only added a Prodrive Back Box to mine and I love it, it sounds great. I have done 3K miles and the car is getting faster as it loosens up.
Have fun. |
I don't know the technical stuff but putting a full scoobysport decat exhaust and ITG panel filter on our MY01 made a huge difference, also putting a few grand on the clock helped a lot too... the car is getting quicker all the time, especially when I drive it ;) :D ;) :D
BTW scoobysport changed the sensor too so no probs there :) Sal |
Jon,
agree with Sal here, i have an MY00 so i dont get any real problems with sensors but getting a better (abiet larger system) does actually give you a better power band and you gain top end of the rev range too :D a full decat system will probably give you around 250ish bhp but as the car gets more miles under the belt you will start to feel some differences anyway ;) Performance wise, the car will just feel much stronger pulling from lower revs and keep on going ;):D also having a great sound to it too :D (the scoobysport exhaust isnt for everyone though as it can be a little intrusive on long journeys so try something like a scoobymania one or a scorpion system if you dont like noise). Plenty of people will give you different opinions on exhausts though but its best to go to a meet and hear for yourself the differences between them, cheap and probably one of the best mods you can do :D Tony:D |
Hi Dave!
Take my advice......get your new car and have fun in it.....you'll learn how to drive it and you'll learn about its limits.....only then should you consider mods! If you're gonna mod it anyway, go for a full ScoobySport exhaust system and Leda B suspension which is just awesome! PPP is also highly recommended and well worthwhile! Welcome to our World....! Cheers DBM |
We've found that the scoobysport exhaust is nowhere near as intrusive on the MY01 as it was on the MY00 or MY96 due to the MY01's much improved sound proofing, in fact I have to drive around with my windows open all the time and I still can't hear it as much as I did on the old cars :( ;)
We've also got Eibach springs, definately feels better on the corners :) |
Are you THE DaveR?

Sal/Tony - thx for the info - as a Scoobysport system is a lot cheaper than a PPP and more easily reversible I'll look into it.....I like how S/S reckon it improves he fuel consumption as well - esp as I can 'sell it in to' the wife on that angle....
Will have to come to a meet - even tho I am from the Essex westside massive, having crossed the state line from the Hert eastside. |
Dave,
Agree with some of the comments, the car is fast, and fun enjoy for a while before considering anything. As you have probably gathered you can do a million and one things to your car to make it quicker there is no bible saying what does what. I'd certainly reccomend getting around 7K under your belt before doing anything too drastic. The really start to loosen up about then. I've got a WR sport BB on mine at the moment and having driven a modded STi7 and PPP I have to say that I probably enjoy my car almost as much as I would a more powerful one. I believe in the balanced package. Case in point, over the weekend, in S.Wales and a chappie in a Toyota Corolla 16v was in front trying it on. Lovely roads and spirited driving :) The areas where the scoob made a real difference were on the corners and brakes. Don't forget suspension braking and go for all out mental bhp, you won't enjoy it half as much! Hope you enjoy yours as much as I love mine. ATB, Simon |
Many thanks to all who've contributed to this thread - I shall now certainly be considering the PPP as the first option (£1500, ouch) although Deep Blue Mica has a point - perhaps I should get used to the car a little first (graduating from a 106GTI ....)
cheers DaveR |
