Newbie Brake Advice Needed

Hi All,

Would appreciate your advice.

I am new to multi piston brakes such as the Brembo's on my 2006 STI. Only recently starting using the car in anger having bought it back in June 2010.

Is it normal for the brakes to need a hard press for them to work

My daily driver is a 2008 Golf GT TDi which has very good brake feel. I find the brakes on my Subaru lack initial bite.

Is it just me being used to the Golf's brakes or could there be something wrong with my setup .

If I really stand on the brakes I can activate the ABS, its just I was expecting a better pedal feel from the Subaru but maybe I am expecting too much :wonder:

Brake setup is as below, all fitted 600 miles ago.
Godspeed grooved discs front and rear
Performance Friction Z rated front pads
Godspeed Kevlar rear pads
HEL lines
5.1 fluid
All pistons are free in the caliper bores.

Sounds normal to me, I run a similar setup and you do have to give a scoobs brakes a bit of go to make the car stop, stops pretty quick when you do ;)

The golf has a strong servo and the impreza's don't , your car sounds normal to me

Thanks Ian , Tony :thumb:, sounds like I am doing my usual trick of worrying too much

I forgot to ask, is it usual to get a slight clonk from the front pads when first braking at slow speeds ? particularly in this cold weather.

The way things have worked out the first time I get to use the car in anger is in the snow and ice of mid Wales. Bit of a baptism of fire and I notice every slight clonk, creak and rattle. On the other hand I can see what all the fuss has been about with the Impreza, they are just fantastic on the country roads arnt they :)

Need some effort... the Transit connect at work scares me, breathe near the pedal and it stops dead.

the problem with most modern cars is that they are over-servoed so little miss miggins can stop safely when she doesn't see the artic coming.................

the Subaru has a more linear pedal allowing you to modulate the pedal pressure for greater/lighter braking giving you more "feel" as to what the tyres/brakes are actualy doing
