japspeed intercooler.... good or bad

i see japspeed are doing 25% off and wondering if anyone has tried there front mount intercoolers and are they any good as generally you get what you pay for so do they do what it says on the tin or should i avoid? says they will handle 600 bhp is this realistic? any comments appreciated :)

cheers, james.

i bought one, haven't put it on but it looks like good quality, paid just over £200 on group buy for mine and i was not disappointed

timthebat 08 December 2010 09:17 AM

Just started fitting mine, although weather has put things on hold, seems fine and quite easy to fit.

my94wrx 08 December 2010 11:38 AM

got one one on my car to.

has anyone got any pics of how the pipes run? have you monitored inlet temps etc as i am interested in how well they cool the air compared to say the hybrids etc which have a fantastic rep?

KAS35RSTI 08 December 2010 12:24 PM

Looking forward to the replies on this FMIC.

belliott69 08 December 2010 12:26 PM

you need to give us some info on your car because if i was to post a picture of the intercooler fitted to my car and you don't have the same year or model it can be misleading or result in you buying the wrong one, as for montioring air temps and comparison to a hybrid i cant help you on that although im sure sure many people have used both types and had good responses from both.

I have a japspeed FMIC fitted. Pipe fitment is good, but not perfect. The drivers side pipe needed a bit more of the bumper trimming than I'd originally hoped and the DV flange is in an awkward space for larger DVs such as the turbosmart or GFB ranges. Temps are good, better than my oversized TMIC which was better than the standard WRX TMIC. In the summer I was seeing inlet temps of approx 20 degrees on a run.

As for fitment pics, I'll sort some out tonight when I get home, I can't find my project thread that showed the fitting.

KAS35RSTI 08 December 2010 01:59 PM

I once purchased a FMIC of ebay for £120 new & after installing, mapping etc the car felt very sluggish. Changed it to a Hybrid & made a huge difference in acceleration.

The Japspeed is up for a good price & if the reviews come back good i will happily purchase one.

Any info on PSI drop & temps would be great.

Scooby Arthur 08 December 2010 03:20 PM

They were featured in a magazine recently, they fitted one to a Hawkeye and it gained about 14bhp without a map so they sound ok. I wish I had got one instead of my HDi one which was a bitch to fit.

I will see if I can find the article.

Would be good to see.

er...stupid question time...what's a hybrid? assume its something inbetween tmic and fmic...cant picture what it would look like though.

Aztec Performance Ltd 08 December 2010 05:55 PM

Hybrid aka HDi = a brand of FMICs.

wrx sti ppp 08 December 2010 05:59 PM

ah...thanks for that! didnt occur to me that it might be a manufacturers name. cheers.

what mods do you have and what are looking at doing the future? as the standard sti intercooler i very out of the box.

KAS35RSTI 08 December 2010 08:09 PM

Are the Hybrid intercoolers still available?

JonMc 08 December 2010 08:32 PM

Can't remember who, I think it was Dynamix, commented on the Hybrid and Japspeed FMICs. IIRC his assessment was that the Hybrid core was better, but the Japspeed pipe run was superior, and the core was still good for 400bhp on the Japspeed model so it depends what you are after. I've seen the Hybrid pipe run and there's a pipe that runs under the engine which can catch on speed bumps etc, especially on lowered cars.

Here's my pics:thumb:

Im not too keen on the idea of the pipe running underneath the car. Any idea of which FMIC to beware of in regards to the pipe running underneath?

P.S What splitter is that?

Hybrid pipework runs under the engine:thumb:

HT Autos splitter:D

The only other thing with the Japspeed FMIC is you need to remove the foglights to run the pipework, and cut away foglight housing.

KAS35RSTI 08 December 2010 09:02 PM

Nice splitter i like very much :)

Could you have cut the pipes on the Japspeed to prevent cutting any bits near the fog cover area?

KAS35RSTI 08 December 2010 09:04 PM

What other FMIC would be recommended for the newage that have good fitments & dont run under the car?

The only issue with doing that is the pipes have a flared end to ensure the hoses don't blow off, you would lose this assurance.

Others are the like of Hyperflow or Perrin, but these are then up in the £700+ mark iirc.

KAS35RSTI 08 December 2010 09:17 PM

Ye thats true aswell as i noticed that on my type r after i chopped a few pipes.

Dont like the sound of £700 though

The cheapest & with best fitment i have seen is the Gimmick FMIC over in the states but that also comes in at almost £500+ shipped to UK.

These tend to be much bigger budgets....

APS / Perrin / Hyperflow - all work great and fit superbly but significant increase in budget required.

TurboXS are good(but 1199$) and in US guys use them more often, but probably best are Perrin,APS,Hypeflow.

I recently bought a second hand APS DR525 FMIC and looking at the fitting instructions and the quality of the kits, it looks like it'll fit like a dream. :)

But as has already been said it's the price which is a killer on the APS and Perrin FMIC's, luckily I picked mine up at a price too good to miss. ;)
