That was a Scottish members Spec C from 2008 I think. It happened on the way back from Crail 1/4 mile strip.

alcazar 03 December 2010 02:30 PM

Yes Spec C, apparently it put a rod through the crankcase, the resulting oil dumped all over the headers and caught fire.

No car extinguisher could have stopped that, firebrigade would have struggled.

wrx287 03 December 2010 03:46 PM

Amazing how quick the fire spreads:eek: Only a fully plumbed in extinguisher would sort that.

Cue Bigarf to tell you just what to buy if you want to save your car...

bigarf 03 December 2010 06:28 PM

that brings back memorys of when mine caught hold on the motorway, due to the oil cooler pipe bursting and spraying oil all over the headers.luckily i had an extinguisher and managed to get it out.you gotta be quick cos them flames dont wait for nobody.

WRX_SWRT 03 December 2010 08:38 PM

Fire brigade did struggle to put it out it was on the way to Crail in the morning, Jim had just brimmed it with vpower and other flammables.

was gone so quick thats us standing up on the banking.

Sorry to barge in but was on the way to work and saw a smouldering Impreza on the M4 by Swansea, about 3 hours later was driving a bus into Swansea and came behind it being recovered.

What a sorry state, I was nearly in tears!!

Hmmm. In a positive way, Im going to contradict you... Plumbed-in extinguishers arent intended to save the car: theyre designed to save you. Foam discharges for longer (and it cools), but powder has a far greater knock-down. A motorsport plumbed-in extinguisher should supress the fire for long enough for you to be rescued, but its the marshals BCE powder extinguishers thatll put it out.

The best thing for a road car is a 4kg-6kg BCE powder extinguisher with an extended hose and a cheap pair of welding gauntlets (and an electrical isolator!). Secure it in the boot using 4 litre AFFF chubby bottle mounts and tie-wrap the gauntlets to it - if youre quick enough you can put virtually anything out with that.

Anything less will struggle - I have a 4l plumbed-in AFFF and a pair of 2l AFFF handhelds in the cabin (actually in my garage now, as my old 944 is on its arse), but Im under no illusion as to their purpose/usefulness. Theyll be re-fitted into my 924S to satisfy the MSA, but I'll carry a large powder extinguisher on the road, particularly when its being shaken down...
