APS 99/00 CAK KN Filter size.

Can anyone tell me what size the standard KN filter on the APS 99/00 CAK was?

My car seems to be gasping for air so I am assuming the filter is clogged. Can you clean them or is it easier to just buy a new one ?

The one I have is in the wing and is sort of cone shaped. is this the best one to replace like for like or is there a different / better shaped one available?

Cheers
Steve

The bigger the better. The one that comes with the kit's not the best quality. On my Blob I got an extended triple ply silicone hose made up which enabled the filter to sit lower behind the cold air feed in the foglight cover. managed to squeeze a AEM dry flow filter in which does a much better job.
Unsure the maximum size a classic will fit though. Sorry M8.

Hi Bodski, could you give me more in fo on the bits you got and where you got them from, I don't have many options over here to research and procure stuff so anything you can help me with would be ideal as I think I need to resolve this sooner rather than later.

Cheers.

I got the filter and extended hose from Frayz M8. he had them specially made up for him by one of the suppliers he uses at Fords where he works. Don't think the same thing is avb off of the shelf anywhere :(

OK Cool thanks I will ask Frayz then.

Ok Cool but do you have any of the bits left I could buy off you. There is absolutely no way on this planet I could source any parts like that here in Germany.

One more thing, you have a bugeye which has loads more space than a classic to fit the filter in the wing.

frayz 17 November 2010 11:10 AM

Unfortunately i dont. I sold the parts i had made to BODSKI. Do you not have a K&N dealer in Germany that can supply you with a like for like filter?

Wurzel 17 November 2010 11:23 AM

The K&N filter kit was not sold in germany for the impreza so doubtful. Plus open air filters are illegal in Germany for some obscure reason. I was stopped by the plod once and given a defect vehicle ticket, I had to get the part TÜV approved or removed withing 14 days then return to the police station with a stamp from the Landratsamt stating the action I had taken. Hence why I will need to source a new filter from the UK but I do not know what size filter it is without taking the car apart to find out. Plus as soemone said the standard filter with the APS is not upto much so what alternative is there that will fit on the APS CAK system as a direct replacement and also fit in the wing? If I can wash the filter then fine but I suspect that is not advised.

frayz 17 November 2010 11:52 AM

Washing it and oiling it will be fine for the filter by oiled filters can play havoc with MAF sensors. That is why i opted for the dryflow filter. These do not use oil so there is no risk of MAF failure. Unfortunately i dont have the dimensions of the classic APS filter.

How much greif is it to take it off and measure it yourself? Even if you can get some images as to how much room you have or some measurements you can see what will be available for it. Im sorry i cant help more :(

I don't have a MAF so should be ok to wash it then.

Daft question I know but what will be best to wash it in water or white spirit. I have never washed a cone filter before, I assume it is made of some sort of paper, and water & paper are not good bed fellows.

Taking it out and cleaning it won't be to much agro as I can do it at the weekend, I just wasn't sure about washing it but now I know I can do that I will wash it and measure it at the same time.

Cheers so far.

Just wash it with warm water and a mild degreaser. Should be okay. Ive done plenty of K&Ns this way. They actually sell a cleaning and oiling kit for that exact job.
