Hazard lights switch.

Noticed last night that my hazard light switch doesn't light up when the car lights are on.
Now I can't remember if it ever did:confused:

So before I take it out and try to replace a non-existent bulb, does the hazard light switch on a classic facelift light up to show it's position, rather than just when the hazards are working?
TIA

i dont think mine does either tbh but i dont really ever use it. i think its just the lights in the dash that flash tho

No I don't mean that, I mean is it lit up in the dark so you can find it, like the HRW, and foglight switches?

gee182 14 November 2010 04:57 PM

i just checked mine, and my HRW and my hazard switch does not light up with the lights on. maybe both of mine have gone then? but i have a pre-facelift so may be different

alcazar 14 November 2010 09:10 PM

The HRW switch does on mine.......but facelift, so yes.

We need more input, folks:D

They should all lit up, you can get replacement bulb from Maplin.

What year? Certainly the HRW switch lights up, as I've already changed the bulb in mine. 98 UK car.

I'll have to take the Hazards switch out and investigate, then. At least I know how to do it if there IS a bulb........;)

joey_turbo 19 November 2010 11:41 PM

Yes, as mentioned it should light up.
Mine never did when it got it.
Easy to replace, especially for you. Its the regular wired bulbs wrapped around the bulb holder. you know the ones.

alcazar 20 November 2010 10:57 AM

Yeah, thanks, I'll nip to Maplins and get some. They would appear to be back in stock.

Rich D 20 November 2010 11:30 AM

yes it should illuminate with the lights on

mine was the same, bulb bad blown, you can change them, I did

alcazar 20 November 2010 02:59 PM

Cheers, just got to nip to Maplins some time.

Yet ANOTHER shop Scunthorpe doesn't have..........

trogg 22 November 2010 02:33 PM

Is it a bulb in the switch?
Neither my Hazards or heated RW light up, and my headlight wash or HL level adjust don't light up.

Fogs do.

00MY UK car.

joey_turbo 22 November 2010 03:03 PM

Yes, bulb in there.
Funny enough, none of mine did either, Had to replace them all.
I think its the BRIGHT switch, which is the only one that doesn't light up.
Here are the bulbs needed:

You can get green ones, saves mesisng about with the sleeves, and makes the switches slightly brighter: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=25545

Non coloured: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1955

It works out cheaper, and easier to get the coloured. Green for the illumination, yellow for "ON" indicator for the fogs and rear screen.

Note, you'll have to unravel the old bulb form the holder, and wrap these around the same way. Its easy though.

alcazar 22 November 2010 04:34 PM

Dead easy to do, but DO work over a piece of white paper on a decent worksurface, NOT in the car;)

You need to register to view that site. :(

Does anyone have a guide to changing the bulbs in the switches, or even just tell me how to get the switches (hazard, heated rear window) out. :wonder:

joey_turbo 15 January 2011 04:16 PM

Just prise the switchers out from the side. It can be done by hand, but a flat screw driver would be better.

alcazar 15 January 2011 05:55 PM

As above, prise out with a medium sized flat screwdriver, put a folded cloth under the blade to avoid marking the trim.

Once it's out, take it inside, and using a smaller flat screwdriver, release the two tangs that hold it together and prise off the rear of the switch.

You will see the bulb and it's little holder, remove it, unwind the wire tails, watching how they are wound, refit as a reverse, clipping off any bit of tail too long,
Reassemble switch and refit.

winston69 15 January 2011 09:29 PM

Thanks for this, made me realise my hazard isn't lit either

Which bulbs did you use then alcazar? Hmm is it worth changing them all even if they are working but to some other colours maybe?

alcazar 16 January 2011 12:36 PM

Bulb is this one from Maplins: http://www.maplin.co.uk/wire-ended-filament-type-1954. also available off e-bay if you don't have a Maplins nearby.

As regards changing them all, it's not something I've done, other than to my instrument cluster, when I had it out and changed all the bulbs at once after one went, mainly to avoid the job again and again..........:(

You CAN put different colour bulbs in but mine have the colour filters in the switch, so I never bothered. I've already done the hrw switch, the hazard light switch is still to do

winston69 16 January 2011 12:42 PM

So that bulb fits every switch? I need to do the hazard and the rear fog light illumination

alcazar 16 January 2011 02:45 PM

Same bulb in 'em all, certainly in a classic.

You got those driving lights done yet?

winston69 16 January 2011 03:19 PM

Being delivered tomorrow :)
Will need the covers spraying though

trogg 16 January 2011 04:32 PM

Just done mine, not too bad just a bit fiddly.

If your not confident, I've a few working Hazard switches.

Just cover the postage & bulb costs, and I'll post one out to you.
Just send me back your bust one.

ST

P.s - Don't forget, if you mess up the Hazard switch your indicators won't work :D

alcazar 17 January 2011 10:11 PM

LOL, give the guy the willys, why don't you...........

SCOOBY TOWERS 18 January 2011 12:35 PM
