P1 or 05 STI - Which is better

Hi there,

I have a 2005/05 STI UK which has 337 bhp and am looking to upgrade to about 400 bhp.

Before I spend a fortune and go past the point of no return by ploughing to much money in to it I want to make sure there is no other car I would want.

I've always been keen on a P1 and would be looking for a low mileage, low owner, high spec & upgraded one. If I was to get one it would be used once, maybe twice a week on the road only (no track work) with about 4k miles per year

Has anyone had the fortune to drive a P1 and a newage STI and if so what spec was each one and which one did they prefer and which one would they go back to given the choice.

Any other comments to help me make my mind up are most welcome

Thanks Robert

I have a version 5 STI type R and an MY03 Spec C, the new age wins it hands down :D but if you want to go the modding way then it will cost you alot more for the P1 to get you to 400bhp than it will for the MY05 STI (plus the P1's engine on the standard maf/ecu setup can be considered delicate :( )

05 sti all day long for me!! all you hear is p1 engine failer, maf failure, loverly looking car just prone to problems IMO.

keep the sti mate;)

05STI wins hands down.

I've got an 0STi and so I'm going to be biased, but I'd say the STi definitely.

P1#1015 10 November 2010 11:44 AM

I drove both and made my decision......

As an everday car the newage is no doubt more refined, yes. But for an occasional toy it has to be the far more raw P1? If it's an occasional car as you have mentioned, then you want it to put a huge smile on your face whenever you take it out. I'm sorry but, as good as an '05 STi is, it doesn't have a patch on a P1 when it comes to thrills. And before all the negative comments come back - remember that I put my money were my mouth is :thumb:

just make sure you have put some £££ by for the rebuild ;)

Newage Sti

I'd be interested to hear what Tony has to say comparing the handling of the two.

Tony, where are you?! :)

SamP1 10 November 2010 12:28 PM

Get a P1 with a full service history and has been rebuilt by a reputable company to 400bhp. 400bhp in a classic is mental and their ain't a better looking scooby ;)

urban 10 November 2010 12:29 PM

The 05STI will have spec C suspension
It'll also have A-DCCD.

What's the differnce between 05 STi suspension and 02 STi suspension (for example)?

Had both and my 05 sti was a type 25, both running similar power both with similar suspension and put it this way I sold the type 25 to go back to a classic

As said the newage is more comfortable, more refined, a better base car for 400+ as it has the 6 speed, brembo's, engines are stronger but for the sale cost of your sti you can buy a P1 with a forged engine, 6 speed / PPG kit, set off K-sports or AP's or brembo's all fitted all mapped and away you go,

A classic running 400+ as a weekend car takes a hell of a lot of beating, agreed the newage chassis may be a little tighter but for a normal guy not trying to shave tenths of seconds of his track times I doubt you will notice if the p1 has coilovers and whiteline gear already fitted, and for what you do notice can be made back in the absolute animal rawness you get with that power in a classic.

If it were me i would take a look in pistonheads and search P1 I am sure there is one on there with all the trimmings and a 2.35 forged bud for sub 10k which in quick sale you would get near that for your sti,

So why spend thousands on your newage when you can buy it all done and just have the up keep like you would in your newage

Not the one in question but you getthe idea

Or this

Or the one I meant was this

Choice is yours, must add I don't know any of the owners etc just trying to give my opinion

05STI 10 November 2010 02:55 PM

Hi,

Thanks for all the comments guys, it seems about 50/50 at the moment. Refering to Stevie1982 comments, there is a P1 on Pistonheads which has 2.5l STI engine with the 6 speed box pushing 450 bhp and has 6 pot brake conversion, all for under £9k

I think I might be sold - anyone want a black STI

05STI 10 November 2010 03:03 PM

Thanks Stevie1982 for finding those, I was writing the above as you posted those. The middle one and the bottom seem really good, although the middle one has had a bit too much done to the outside for my taste. Thanks again for finding those.

Be interesting to see what people think now?

Luckyscoob 10 November 2010 03:11 PM

Personal preference I would say. Both awesome cars, but its you who has to drive it. Have you driven a P1 yet. If not, that has to be the first thing to do.
Either way, bith nice cars so enjoy!.

chrispy200+ 10 November 2010 05:13 PM

That p1 with the 2.35 looks a cracking buy

can always buy a set of headlights and standard alloys then it wont look any different, and its a bloody good spec for the money would be shame to walk away for a set of lights off ebay for £100 and a used set of alloys at £400

agreed, drive a type r or p1 then imagine it with and extra 150-200 bhp i think you will go and buy one, the classic imo will feel a lot more responsive and rawer over your sti and i think you will like it

05STI 10 November 2010 05:45 PM

I suppose like you say Stevie1982 spend £5-600 putting it back to standard and sell the parts just taken off for £3-400 and then its not that bad at all.

I think the next step as suggested is to try and find one to test drive, unless anyone on here lives near Horsham, West Sussex who would fancy taking me for a spin.

Just need to sell the STI now, I think I've been talked in to it

TonyBurns 10 November 2010 07:16 PM

I think you will actually hate buying the classic tbh, they are not really "raw", the best way to discribe them is unrefined.
Raw would be the feedback given by the car, a big cruiser would be described as comfortable, but the steering feel is in most cases, over assisted, its a nice place to be, unrefined is exactly that, creaks, rattles, aches, feedback isnt the best etc, thats your classic, the only one that would fit the bill of being raw would be an RA.
My new age is raw compared to my unrefined Type R, I love the type R for what it is, and its a very capable car, but on the road the Spec C just gives you more back, and if a type R cant give you that, then you have no chance with a P1 :(

Now to the selected cars ;)

The 400bhp 2.35 car, excellent price, but 22 days and not sold? hmmm I would be wondering why considering a standard P1 with that mileage would go for 10k.

The 450bhp one, yet again a givaway price condsidering what has been spent and what you can get a good low mileage p1 for, 2 weeks and not sold? surely these cars would be snapped up? ;)

The last one with 380bhp and the one I deem the funniest :lol1: 380bhp and 350bhp at the wheels :cuckoo: thats a record condsidering most lose 20-25% with a vicious coupling centre diff ;)
Paddle clutch (if you have never driven a car with one, you wont want to :lol1: ) and it weight is just over 1000kg :cuckoo: try nearer 1300kg ;)

I can pretty much promise you now, you wont like how these cars drive or the feel :( your MY05 STI will feel nicer on the road and you will miss not having it, or if you want the best sell your MY05 UK car and go twin scroll, now there is a car and a half :D

Tony:)

TonyBurns 10 November 2010 07:20 PM

Have a look at something like this, easily taken to 400bhp :D plus its very capable ;)

Anger 10 November 2010 07:27 PM

I went from a 450bhp classic RA to a 450bhp Newage STi... i wouldnt go back

angry_boy 10 November 2010 07:28 PM

P1! And I've only driven it for half a day before it went bang, but mega fun with only 330-350. 400 would be awesome. There are some bargains to be had at the mo, all the ones highlighted have had all important rebuilds too.

ThePoorMansScooby 10 November 2010 07:45 PM

that 450bhp p1 sold straight away

angry_boy 10 November 2010 07:48 PM

Not surprised at that price. Anyone here?
