Hi All

At the min i have a vec gsi, mk4 supra and a 300zx

I am looking to sell the supra and get a scooby because i have my 1st little one on the way http://www.subaru-impreza.org/forum/...c/ext_baby.gif

Just a few questions i would like to ask that have proberly been asked a million times lol!!!!

Im looking to get the 99spec impreza, with a few nice little mods on it i think it can look bang upto date.

My question is wtf is all the sti and WRX etc, Ive read a few things and have an idea.

the 2000turbo is a uk spec with 220hp but i have also read there is a 250hp is that the WRX and is the STI the 280hp??

Also how do you tell jdm to uk spec apart from the rear fog.

Also what to look out for when buying one

Welcome to Scoobynet :)

On a classic both the WRX and STI's are imports and they feature a rear wiper blade for example. UK cars have lower power out of the box than Imports but that's easily fixed with a few mods.

What's your budget and what are you after?

CarMadDave 07 November 2010 12:04 AM

Cheers Mate

I was after a 99spec, version6 is it or 5, was looking to spend about 4k/5k tops but i will have to get rid of the supra 1st.

do you know if the wrx is 250hp and sti 280??

For the uk spec im gussing its just a chip, boost exhaust and filter to get it upto sti spec?

Luminous 07 November 2010 12:07 AM

UK cars have a nicer interior (imo) which is grey. Import STIs have a 5 speed box (like the Uk) but much shorter ratios which makes motorway cruising noisy. Best bet is a modded UK classic, or an imported STI with a 6 speed box (rare as hens teeth).

Your power levels are correct. No chance that those modes makes a UK car an STI. STI is a different beast, with DCCD. Just sold my 50k 99 classic for £4k, no way are you going to get a good STI V5/6 for that money.

CarMadDave 07 November 2010 12:10 AM

Thanks for your input mate :)

So uk spec with the above mods would it see me at roughly?

would most proberly go for a uk or a wrx.

Any bad points??

Thanks again mate, huge help. the sti would be to quick anyway. Its for my mrs and she will never use the power of the wrx anyway, like i said it will be for our new born along with the gsi, zed my toy :)

My UK got an exhaust (full ss with sports cat) and I reckon that put me at about 235 bhp, then I got a replacement ECU on mine (Simtek), and that put me close to 300bhp. I played with classic STI's and newage STIs and none of those which were standard were quicker.

I had a play with a classic WRX (private road) and after 120mph I was all over him - after tuning.

I stayed with a standard air filter, as there are not meant to be much in the way of gains when changing those. Reason for a different ECU to a remap was to get rid of the MAF sensor.

Problem I always had with my UK car was it had too much understeer. A STI with DCCD can get rid of some of that.

You are going to have to try both. Personally, I don't see much point in looking at a WRX. Go either UK or an import STI.

CarMadDave 07 November 2010 12:27 AM

Thats good to know. Becks will never push the car to under steer. so that will be cool just the power would be nice for overtaking on the A roads and a55 on the way to work.

so full exhaust and chip should see it around 260-280hp that will be more than enough. no point in us getting a sti. She will never really use any boost tbh lol!!!

sure most would have those mods now anyway. should be looking at about 5.5 to 60 then :)

Will spend more on body work so it will be a pamperd scooby lol!!

Any bad points on scoobs?

No, not really, MAfs can be sensitive on the age of car you are looking at, but those are sorted for circa £100. Other than that you are good I think. No issue with mine anyway :)

CarMadDave 07 November 2010 12:43 AM

Sweet. nice and reliable then if looked after. Ive had a look at poly bushes etc and all running gear and it all seems cheap enough to maintain. well cheaper than the supra lol!!!

Thanks for all your help mate, I owe you a pint :)

Problem no2, need to find a nice one now, looking for a nice white one, then i can do a little drop, set of 18" gold i think. exhaust and chip. paint the headlights black inside, nice bonnet vents 22b style, nice grill, p1 front lip and fog covers, colour code mirrors, door handles, skirts rear spats and bigish boot spoiler, clear rear lights.

should look pritty sweet then. Im not keen on stock lol!!!!

Thanks again Mate:)

Chip ? you mean remap ..

scoobyd00999 07 November 2010 09:35 AM

I was under the impression that all imports (wrx and sti) were 280 bhp as standard and the wagons were 250bhp

You want a remap mate .. a chip is a standard waste of time ..

A remap will give you a whole new car ..

CarMadDave 07 November 2010 10:01 AM

yeah thats cool. surpose it will tie everything all together.

Got the zed going in sometime this month. cannot wait. Did you go to Dyno Demon on the wirral??

biggi 07 November 2010 10:06 AM

White 2000 sport, more chance off meetimg the pope bud!!!!,

mit 07 November 2010 10:21 AM

You can't chip a uk 99 anyway, it's a remap i'm afraid. You need to decide how much you intend to spend, as remaps(£500), exhausts(£2-300), etc soon adds up. The other thing to think about, if buying a jap import, you'll need to run it on super like VPower, as the ecu is mapped to run high octane fuel. Many a jap car has blown due to the use of 95 ron. This along with insurance makes the Jap versions more expensive to run.
Jap cars are always cleaner,(i'll never buy uk again) depending how long it's been in the UK, and will need undersealing if not already done. Lots to think about!

one last question i promise lol!!!

How to tell between uk spec and jdm? uk has the gray/white seats. JDM has the red trim? and also the horrid rear fog light, maybe the 110 clocks??

Anything else i can tell from pics on ph and ebay for example :)
