Such ostentation does not befit you Comrade Lewis!

Jamie 02 November 2010 09:26 PM

For four # 4 Once you have found a good deal :D

pslewis 02 November 2010 09:34 PM

I understand that if you have collected £500 worth of TESCO Vouchers you can turn them into the £2000 required.

No need to have a fake then, is there? :thumb:

Aaron1978 02 November 2010 09:44 PM

Even less need to have a £2k watch.

pslewis 02 November 2010 09:46 PM

But it will always be worth £2000 ... that's the point of these items of desire.

So why not buy a £100 fake and put the other £1900 in a savings account?

Steve vRS 02 November 2010 09:52 PM

Scoobynet law says that as soon as a watch thread starts, the fake vs. real argument starts.

Wish I hadn't changed a load of Tesco points into Air miles now :(

You are missing the point completely! This is a luxury item, not bought for functionality alone.

Jamie 02 November 2010 09:54 PM

Do you buy fakes azz?

bugger wrong account :(

Pay £2000 for it then try and sell it and find out you can't get anywhere near £2k :)

I'm not missing the point. Who is ever going to know it is worth £2k apart from you? Unless you're the kind of person who goes down the pub showing it to everyone! You can buy an identical looking one (if it is the kind of style you like) for a lot less and earn more money on the interest in a savings account. I understand that people like to buy expensive watches, but in a watch surely your requirments are tell the time, look good and last a long time? I never said people shouldn't buy them.

Same reason you don't buy a Nova with a stick-on bonnet scoop for £200 .... but buy an Impreza Turbo for £2000.

The Nova + £1800 in the Bank ...... OR ...... The Impreza with £0 in the Bank?

I think we all know which one will stir the soul more?

Not the same comparison though is it?

If you could get a car that was made almost identicly and looked and performed exactly the same as an Impreza for £200, than yes:freak3:

There's a number of reason why you'd buy an original and not a fake. For a start the real one will be vastly superior quality. The fake is made with maximum profit/minimum cost in mind. The real one has a reputation of quality to live up to. You pay £200 for a 'good' fake and if it breaks that money is all gone. The original is likely to have a 3 year warranty, and be far less likely to go wrong as you are payng for a very high quality item.

Secondly you can almost always spot a fake if you know a bit about watches. The attention to detail is always much greater - it's like looking at something in HD compared to normal quality. IMO one of the easiest ways to tell if its fake tho is by the kind of person wearing it in first place. If you're trying to impress and you get clocked that you're wearing a fake then you look like a bit of a cheap-skate.

Real quality watches such as Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Tag etc hold their value very well - so although you're paying £2k, it's likley you can enjoy owning a luxury item, and still get £1500 for it in a few years time if you need to.

Nice watches are obviously seen as a bit of a status symbol, but its also nice to own something which has been manufactured with such attention to detail, and has a history behind it.

I wouldn't buy a fake as they are made cheaply 9/10.

The fake was an example as a link was posted up, you can get a quality watch brand new with warranty that looks exactly the same and in a lot of cases made with the same parts.

Are you trying to say you're not paying for the name?

JTaylor 02 November 2010 11:11 PM

Muslims wear fake watches.

Of course you're paying for the name to an extent, but you're also paying for a reputation for quality - just like when you buy a car like an Audi, BMW etc.

Agree you could buy a £100 Casio and have the warranty of a high end watch - just like a dirt cheap car that comes with a 3 year warranty or a Mercedes S-class comes with a 3 year warranty. Both will get you to work, but if you can afford the Merc you'd likely choose that.

People that bemoan expensive watches usually can't afford them :D
