How do newage JDM engines rev to 8k? what extras do they have making this possible?
As above.
what makes them rev higher and is it possible to get a uk engine to rev that high? anyone raised the rev limit on their uk engine by any chance? Also what would it take when getting my 2.1 built to get it to rev to 8/8.5k rpm? Eddy |
I asked Andrew Carr to raise mine...
He said he usually drops it by 500 rpm if you ask ! dunx P.S. Possibly more aggressive cam timing/lift ? P.P.S. As A.J. @ Enginetuner... Arf's does it ( but that may be a billet crank > £2K ! ) |

Eddy As for the 2.1 you dont need a fancy billet crank to rev that high, Andy F was revving to that with a standard sti crank. Would advise 1 piece valves, double valve springs, possibly titainium retainers and better cams though. Banny |
i'll need to get some prices on them, i defo want a higher rev limit on the new engine.. would it require any different parts to get it to 9/9.5 like yours banny? or a much bigger cost or are they similar price range?

Valvetrain and nitrided crank. :)
To a certain degree unless you have a big turbo to make use of the extended range, I would question any need to extend it past 7k. |
Shaun an MD321V on a 2 litre would merit an extended rev range ;)
|
I asked Bob Rawle to map mine (UK classic) for 8250 rpm as I have STi3 heads so thought it would be OK ... he said that I'd need the following before he'd do it:
"Raising the rpm limit that far strictly needs the valve train to be uprated, solid lifters as an essential, otherwise the shims are known to jam valves open, also you need to consider double valve springs" Zak @ Mocom suggested that it's not a cheap mod ;) TX. |
cheers banny, - yes Shaun - bigger turbo so extended rev limit would be good :D

and you've had no problem revving to 8.5krpm? i'd be happy with just 8 on the standard engine and 8.5 on the 2.1

S206, simtek ecu, mapped by JGM/Martyn... Engine is completely standard and has covered approx 14k miles at 400 bhp and 8k at 460bhp. It is driven very hard everyday.

Correct me if im wrong but im sure you were selling up as you blew the engine on it a while back?

No Andrew Carr wouldn't raise it...
This was on a car with a useable power band from 6K to 7500 rpm. So I needed it badly... :lol1: I wouldn't expect to get to 8500 rpm except on the dragstrip to save a gearchange.... IMHO. dunx P.S. I shift at 7400 rpm, and love the idea of reachimg 8000+ rpm once a month. A.J. @ EngineTuner is supposed to be sorting my heads, but he's very busy at the moment... so I'm waiting for the phone call to discuss "spec". |

Nope engine hadn't blown, I put a for sale ad up as money was a little tight at the time... Had a couple of issues with the breather system which was causing it to smoke slightly in stop start traffic but once I plumbed the pcv back in it's been running very well, covered 3k miles since then. Tbh I normally change gear just before it reaches 8k as the power starts to tail off... When this engine fails I'll look at building a new one with uprated valvetrain/cams etc.. But so far it's been fine!
Ohh. 8k would have been a bargain then for a working car!! |

any word from martyn or JGM when mapping it for the higher revlimit? any advice or warning from them? |
Mine is set at 7600 which is as high as Bob would allow :lol1:
TX. |
I never take mine past 5,000rpm. Cant hurt her like that :luvlove:
|
lol you girl kas! cars are made to be driven!
and terminator.. is yours a standard newage engine? or built? |
It's still big fun trying to kill mine with 2 bar of boost :lol1:
I'm aiming to get into a budget restricted 2011 "slot"... It's either me doing it, or my MOT tester Ben the Ev* man, or if I can scrape up some more shekhls AJ himself :notworthy I'd like it strong and reliable, not chasing a number... just want to enjoy it for what it does best  LOL dunx |
Isn't it well over 7krpm on a UK STi anyways? Pretty sure mine goes past 7500rpm..
