gear box questions...

hi all,

couple of questions for you all.

1) is there a way to test a box whilst off the car? to make sure there are no major issues before you fit it?

2) how does the geabox selector work, selector shaft don't move that much.

1. The only practical way to test it properly is on the car under load. If you're buying a used one, try and go for a drive in the donor vehicle before it is removed.

2. The selector on the back of the box may not appear to move much, but don't forget that the gearstick incorporates a significant leverage ratio. So, the shaft/UJ on the box will feel very stiff to move by hand, but you should still be able to get all the gears.

seems like the selector only has two positions when moving the shaft by hand

Like I said, without the extra leverage of the gearstick, the selector shaft will feel very difficult to move. Likelihood is that right now you're pushing/pulling all the way from third to fourth.

Try to find neutral in the middle and then you should be able to rotate the shaft anticlockwise (looking at it) to the 1st/2nd plane, and then clockwise to the 5th/reverse. If it's just a bare shaft without a joint on it, try sticking a screwdriver/pin through the hole to give you a bit more purchase and control.
