What year model is it mate?
when is the rattle, all the time?
when hot/cold both?
Does it seem more from the middle of the engine or the sides?

l1verp00l 25 October 2010 10:25 PM

2002 wrx sti

hard to tell wen its cold as it is so loud anyway. is deffo rattling when warmed up. sounds like the side of the engine bt will have a closer listen.

When was the oil changed last?
What oil is it being run on?
And if its coming from the side then it sounds more like valve train noise, also big ends do rattle bad from cold start up mate.

15w 40 done in febuary. is there a test I can do to check

prodriverules 25 October 2010 10:40 PM

Has this rattle only just started since the cold weather?15w/40 seems abit thick for winter use imho in a newage.

l1verp00l 25 October 2010 10:49 PM

thicker the better shurely for winter n noise?

prodriverules 25 October 2010 10:52 PM

To apoint mate but they recommend a 5w/40 for your motor so id say a 10w/50 would be better suited, also id get the bonnet popped on next cold start and see if the noise is there then mate, and also try to pin point the noise to heads or bottom end.

If you think its the big ends, with the engine warm bring the revs up to 2500rpm and release the throttle - you will hear the distinctive big end knock as the revs drop if they have failed/on their way out.
A loose front pulley bolt will also cause a knocking noise as will a worn timing belt tensioner -might be worth taking it to a local specialist to get them to diagnose it.

Hopefully its nothing too serious.

Ha ha! Pretty good Christmas pressie for you then.

Oh, and oil? Thiner in winter to allow it to work from cold;)
