Gearbox/diff issues when warm?!?

Hi all,

I have a 2000 model Impreza Wagon 2.0 Sport. The car has done 180k miles. The exterior and interior are immaculate. I dont think anyone has ever sat on the back seats of the car!!

The car drives perfectly. The only problem is that when I have driven for a bit, the gearbox/diff feels clunky. If Im at a stand still and turn left or right when pulling away. Its loud and clunky and you can feel it on the steering wheel. It doesnt do this when I first start driving the car for the day.

Im going to start by checking the oil levels and probably draining and replacing the oil.

With me only having this car for a few days Im going to need to some help.

1) I know how to check the levels of the rear diff, but where do I check the levels of the front diff/gearbox?
2) What is the best oil to use for both of these?
3) Best place to buy this in Manchester?
4) Anyone know of any good mechanics that dont charge an arm and a leg?

Thanking you in advance!!

sounds like the centre diff, quite common and only does it when warmed up

What is the fix for this? Does it need replacing? Will new oil help?

Thank you

Having a read on the forum the best oil to use is a 90 and not a 75/90.

Is this for the gearbox and the rear diff?

Thanks for the heads up!

Where is the centre diff? Is it in the gearbox itself?

Any one know of somewhere that I can get it looked it in Manchester?

Yes centre diff in the box

Is this something that can be replaced or does the whole gearbox need replacing?

it's bolted to the back of the gearbox and can be replaced without dropping the whole box, just remove the rear cover
