car problem number 1
 

went to start today and CEL came on and when started, it revs up to 1600 and just stays put. thought it was just because its getting colder now. left for a few mins then pulled off down the drive and the revs were all over the place. any suggestions before the stealers get a call???

Sounds exactly like the symptoms I've just had in my Bug

In my case it was the idle control valve was coked up, just needed cleaning out and the ECU resetting and all was well. Get the garage to check the error codes - it should have something fairly explanatory in there.

Failing that, Sparks/Coils/Leads etc

Has it thrown a EML light up? Have you removed the TMIC at all lately?

It could be the ICV. I suggest taking the it off and spraying it with carb cleaner etc. The screws need to be replaced after. M5 x 20mm hex screw I went for. YOU WILL NEED A REPLACEMENT GASKET.

just the emissions light mate. put a new battery on as i thought it could be that as its the original one. went for a slow drive along my street and the cars revs keep jumping and dropping. if i dip the clutch the revs just jump between 1600 and 2600. driving over 3k is fine, no probs at all. going slow its all over the place.

Sounds like a ICV issue mate unless it has a slight air leak from TMIC pipe etc.

Unplug the ICV itself. Use a 8mm FLAT head screwdriver.A rubber mallet a ratchet with a 8mm attachment.

Place the 8mm flat head screw driver in the screw head on the ICV. (The current screw heads are phillips style). Gently tap the end of the screw driver and turn the screwdrive anti-clock wise.

Are you have done this about 5/6 times if no movement get the ratchet out. Push down with a little bit of force and turn the ratchet (anti-clock wise) and they should come loose.
I would get a new gasket before trying this mate.

I bought a new one but others have sprayed carb cleaner or petrol onto the ICV once removed. I did this after and cleaned my old ICV. The amount of crap built up was shocking.

Let it dry out and refit.

I personally wouldn't bother with the old screws. I purchased some new stainless m5x20mm hex screw cap head screws and washers and put them in.
