Gear linkage inside gearbox

Hi guys,
I've got a problem with the gear shift in my STI V2 gearbox:
When I move my gear lever from neutral position left or right (without engaging any gear), it won't relocate to neutral.
Of course, I've fitted the external spring (directly on the linkage underneath the gear lever) correctly, but I assume the gear linkage is pretensioned inside the gearbox as well.

The pretensioning system inside the box should be situated underneath this round cover:

Is it possible to remove this cover by loosening the 3 screws, or do I have to remove the rear end cover?
Can I simply change the tensioner?

Thanks,
Rudi

That round cover hides the reverse check spring. Subaru boxes only relocate out of fifth/reverse plane hence only one spring on linkage.

What could be the problem then with my gearbox?
I fitted the spring on the linkage correctly, but it won't relocate...
