Engine management light on WRX

Hi guys and girls ;0). I have have a Subaru WRX 2002 brought secord hand direct from subaru and I keep getting the engine magagement light on when every I drive over 80 mph. I kept taking it back and they kept resetting engine magaement and saying bring it back when It comes back on which I did and I kept keeping the same answer bring it back again. I finally got them to replace the engine coils but again Getting the magagement light on so I took it to another garage they did me a engine magagement print out and I'm getting a misfire on cylinders 1 2 3 4 so they have recommended I replace all 4 coils again. But after speaking to a friend they have advised me to replace the spark plugs and leads.

SO THE QUESTION IS. Whats the spark plugs and leads I can buy for my year at a reasonable price and has any 1 else had this problem and if so how did they solve it. (my car is always mantained and not just raced about with no maintance)

Many thanks. (and PLEASE HELP)

i'm hoping someone technical may help you - I have a simialr problem.
My engine management light comes on during hard pulling in 3rd or 4th gear, it flashes and then stays on. It stays on for about 2.5 days and turns off again. I wait another week and it comes on again. The dealer I brought it from said the car showed it was lead 1.

Hello and welcome mate,

Sorry to hear your ownership isn't going so smooth.

If you purchased the car from a approved Subaru dealer you would have had the warranty (12 months) . If it is within this time take it back or take it to another one matey.

Where abouts is your location.

Steve

Hi thanks for the reply. I had the same Prob with it only flashing then saying on for a few days then going off but now it just stays on. I've spoke to a few ppl and they say the same thing change the plugs and leads because I only had the coils changed 5000 miles ago.

I live in Romford, Essex, UK. So if any 1 knows of a good garage around my area then please let me know.

Mant thanks.

Interesting to note that a 2002 WRX doesn't have ignition leads but individual coil packs, one on each spark plug.

Sounds as if changing the plugs may be a good idea though.

Are the cars completely standard. Any exhaust modifications?

BexWRX 21 October 2010 11:09 AM

Mines completely standard - although if I change the exhaust with it cause the light to have a minor tamtrum? Anyone got any good suggestions to the best plugs to use - is it worth changing the coil packs too - i used to have a megane that threw out a coil every couple of months - drove me mad!

dynamix 21 October 2010 11:15 AM

Nothing wrong with the coils or plugs IMO.

This code tends to be a bad earth from the engine when revved highly and is often accompanied with the cam timing error fault too.

Bugeye ECU random CEL Generator LOL. Camshaft position sensor error common at high revs, sometimes goes after a clean of the sensor. You should have the historic code stored on the ECU even if the CEL light goes out.

The other one is a faulty neutral position switch throwing spurious misfire CELS.

The joys of owning a bugeye :)

I'm going to buy 4 NKG or Nology spark plugs today. Get them fitted and the engine light reset if I still get same problem then change the coils and hope for the best.

Stevesbluewrx 23 October 2010 07:40 AM

Best of luck mate. Hope it works ok for you.

Ok. But what can I do to put this fault right? Can you please advise me. I notice u deal with imprezas what is your location. If you are to far away from Essex. What can I advise my local garage to do?

See my post number 9....... do a search on here for faulty NPS problems giving multiple misfire CELS on the bugeye..... for example.

I got a similar fault, if i do a constant speed say 70+10 my cel comes on and with the code reader i got it tell me its the sensor on the up pipe. this has only started since i put a strait thou 3" exhaust on it.

I have just re-read the OP post and need to ask a question.

Martin.dean1981 , does the car feel any different once the the light come on?

Any smells etc?

I think its a 2001 WRX thing. I remember my old WRX throwing up a code in the same place of the M25 if I was between the speeds of 70-80 mph.

Any modifications to the car at all?

Do you have a DV?

Steve

Martin.dean1981 23 October 2010 05:48 PM

There r no mods to the car the codes are P0304 P0303 P0302 P0301 20B1 20B0. I work mon - fri and would b home for about 5pm. What time would u b planning on coming over at.

dynamix 23 October 2010 06:53 PM

It would have been early afternoon.

Try the nuetral position switch and check the earths - reckon that will solve it rather than replacing all the coils/plugs ..

Fuzz 23 October 2010 07:17 PM

Not to mention the cost of the new age coils
Very unlikely to be them in my opinion.
Looks like you are in good hands with Dynamix on the case :thumb:

Martin.dean1981 23 October 2010 07:35 PM

dynamix 24 October 2010 11:18 AM

EGT sensor too high.

Have you decated your up pipe too ? otherwise that's going to get pretty toasty. :)

Midlife...... 24 October 2010 01:39 PM

More than likely the WRX pre-cat has been replaced..........and the new up-pipe either has no EGT sensor hole or it's been blanked off. I bet there is a spare connector by the offside suspension turret (where the EGT lead should be). LOL

Shaun

wrx,sti 24 October 2010 03:40 PM

yeah full decat and the EGT sensor is in the decat up pipe and still wired up, like i said it only started to happen when i went 3" all the way

Midlife...... 24 October 2010 04:21 PM

wrx, sti

What turbo are you running in your WRX?

Shaun
