Quietest exhaust

Afternoon all,

I have a classic type R with the cat downpipe currently fitted (but have a decat, just not fitted it yet). It has a stainless hks decat exhaust fitted (with a resonator), 1 piece, from the downpipe back. At idle it is almost silent, which is nice. When driving though, it is slightly too loud. It is nowhere near a nur spec and is also quieter than a vortex.

What are my options to get a quieter exhaust that will let me goto 100db trackdays? Is a custom exhaust with large resonator and larger backbox the way to go? Power levels will remain under 400 bhp, but it still needs to flow better than the standard exhaust.

Any ideas?
Thanks,

This might help:

I had a Cat back system on my classic - Afterburner mid section and Ninja II back box. It was measured at 89dB (Peak) at 5.5k rpm 1m from the tail pipe section. The package was less than six months old.

What power output was the car producing?

my bug eye was running 360 hp and was only 93db at castel comb the tester said scoobys are quite quiet with the burble that was with a 3.5" straight through and a hks back box hope this helps also passed the mot fine

Id say go custom mate. The guy that done mine in South Wales can make it as loud or quiet as you want without restricting performance:thumb:

racebox backbox, magnex backbox, prodrive backbox, all nice backboxes nice sound not that loud.

I am running 330 with a Bugeye STi backbox on my 2000 Classic, very quiet and no difference in power from the Prodrive one i was running before

JamesWalker 14 October 2010 05:45 PM

why did you change to the prodrive one? which was quieter?

scoobyboy1 14 October 2010 05:53 PM

HKS Super dragger is pretty quite, used to piss me off how quite it was.

The car came with a Prodrive but it sounded sooooo chavvy so I went for the Sti as I wanted the performance without the looks like a drainpipe, louder than a B-52, look at me option ;)

The Sti one has a slight burble when you have been thrashing it but otherwise nice and inconspicuous

I have a 3" Decat DP, straight through centre pipe and an original design scooby sport BB. 1995 STI 555 Wagon.

I had it tested at Snetterton last weekend 104.8 feckin db !!!

No chance for me :( need a custom silenced centre section !

Sounds like you need a new backbox too, a resonator wont take much off the total as the air flow doesnt alter much.

Revolution exhausts are *very* quiet :D

I run a Revolution 3" exhaust on a 400 BHP Bugeye which hopefully does not wake the neighbours as I have to leave early to get to work .

Do you have any cats with the revolution system? It sounds promising, though I will be cat-less

My 3" revolution is completely cat-free :D, you have to be careful IIRC as it's a slip jointed system and needs adapters to mix and match with other systems.

:lol1: 105db my arse !

If I can't get the classic any quieter, I am going to make it ear bleeding instead and use the NewAge for track :thumb:

Mine's pretty quiet at lowish to medium revs, so a reasonable degree of user control.
It's pretty much all Hayward and Scott, using the three and a half inch tail-piped stainless back box. Sound file attached.
