why do some v5/v6 sti's have 4 or 2 doors?

might be a really stupid question...

was it a factory option?

No, its a different model, the Type R came in back in version 3 guise (MY97), the "R" stands for retna which is the codename for the 2 door shell, the R's ran from MY97 to MY00's, with both a WRX limited version on some years and STI versions for all the above years.

thanks for clearing that up. so to put it simply, am i right in saying just the type R's came with 2 doors?

Most 2-doors are Type-R's. Other 2-Doors are the UK Spec P1 and the 22b.

All 2 doors share the Retna shell, that includes the P1 and 22B ;)
