Where to buy * really* cheap cars

Right, some of you might have seen the yearly scumrun rally reports I do. Well we're gearing up for next year and I have a problem.

Usually the cars are limited to 500 quid which presents plenty of opportunities, but this year we need to go as cheap as possible. Why? well....

This years theme is 'Dodgems'. I think you can see where this is going:D We have teamed up with a few of the other regulars and are planning on buying cars, spraying (or even hand painting them) lurid colours, then stretching half a tractor tyre round the front and rear bumpers, sticking a pole out the roof and then playing dodgems across europe :p

The reason we need a *really* cheap car is because it's going to be dodgems with full contact. The basis of which is on top gear when they bump their crap cars into each other when they return after their challenges, it's funny and we want to replicate that. Plus for the full dodgem experience we are going to be playing really **** dance music throughout the rally :D:D:D

Herin lies the problem. In previous years we have always brought our cars back and sold them, I seriously doubt anyone is going to want to buy a car which has dents all over it and tractor tyres for bumpers.

For obvious reasons, the cars need to be fairly sturdy (micras need not apply) and no more than 200 quid to buy, but I have just not found any even close to that. Does anyone know of somewhere which sells cars at rock bottom prices? They can have them back after the four days and keep the money if they really want, we just need something which is cheap and doesn't need it's looks after we're finished with it.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Try Copart. You can get all sorts from them, although the cheapest you will get one will be £172.88 with all fees paid.

Crazy man. :D

Can you not speak to a local scrapper they don't always have cars that are not roadworthy and they may have it back after so they can scrap it?

Jeep Cherokee XJ

Can be had for a few hundred quid. Mechanically they are usually OK its the cosmetics that make them cheap.

4.0 is thirsty, 2.5 is a bit weak but not as thirsty. Diesel is a bit more expensive because its not as hard on the juice but its a rubbish engine.

Just the job IMO.

Sounds good but the stuff they do on TG is very low speed this sounds a bit riskier... I think you'll need to do some strengthening but be careful of the cops if you do. I'd also make sure you have a lump hammer to knock the arches back off the tyres if needed!

Scrap Yards were I live always have a MOT failure for 80-100 quid

I once got a mint (as mint as a car from the scrappy could be) Volvo 440 for £80, that would make qite a good dodgem :lol1:

Please take video footage :D :D

Oh, and if you try to get into Germany, please take lots of video footage...I would just love to see their faces when you show up at the border :lol1:

As for cheap cars, I really don't know, but I will keep an eye out just in case I happen to come across something that may fit the bill.

Jaybird-UK 13 October 2010 01:03 PM

That rover I posted has a lot going for it for a Euro invasion, made in England, British Racing green and long MOT

haha! They'll wonder why I put a REALLY big tick in the collision damage waiver box:lol1:

As well as that, some more good advice here, I like the idea of the rover and ideally I'd like something which was still packing an MOT, although I realise this bumps the price up a tad.

Cheers for the links peeps, I'll keep looking

I realise what your saying, but our stuff is going to be low speed as well. We'll have a rule of no contact above 20mph and even up to that is going to be light. Most of our argy bargy is going to be limited to car parks and camp sites (running into the front wing when parking, opening of car doors into team mates doors etc.)

Bottom line is we're all experienced rally goers. Most of us have 5 years attendance under our belts, no-one is going to go over the top, however a lump hammer will be in the boot!
