New Shell Fuel
 

I was out and about in our family runabout the other day an E39 530d.

It felt very rough and generally sluggish and I asked her indoors what fuel it had in it as it didn't feel quite right.

She told me she had filled it with the new Shell fuel - supposedly better running at the same or lower cost.

It was awful and I could argue it was a blind test and it felt like supermarket special. V Power Diesel might cost a bit more but it transforms the car.

I've got an good anecdote for this:

We had a guy with a A4 v6 Tdi, quite a fussy fellow, but he did notice with a minor running issue whilst cruising (imbalance like a minor partial misfire on one or two cylinders). Suspecting water in the fuel, we asked if he used the same filling station, we advised to run it down and try a different garage. He reported back and he claimed that filling with Vpower diesel solved the problem.

He came back 2 weeks later with same problem again. After some poking and prodding initially suspecting a duff injector, it was later found to be two broken valve springs.

He was lucky a valve didn't drop as it would have wrecked the engine. Kudos given for noticing the problem that many drivers wouldn't have even noticed.

The moral? Vpower can temporarily fix broken valve springs. Or it could be that sh*t happens and it was totally coincidental ;):D

That's pretty good - two replies in an hour that don't really answer the idea postulated!

The point is you say your car is running crap, and you assume its the fuel. When it could be coincidental, like say, an injector on its way out (common on BMWs, I may add), or water contamination. :)

Like the Audi TDi, that appeared to run better on Vpower diesel, but actually the fault wasn't the fuel, it was another underlying problem (broken valve spring).

I think youj'll find that there are literally hundreds of cars developing problems after using Fuelsave

I'm sorry but I don't believe all this shell bashing. People are just jumping on the bandwagon if you ask me.

There's thousands of cars going wrong every day, someone attributes it to a specific fuel then the next man (reads it on the net) has the perfect excuse.. "yeah my car's running bad and I put shell in it"

Could even be a rival starting dozens of rumours on the net.

I've used it in my van and noticed bugger all difference to bp.

Runs crap bcos it was a E39? With its age, you should feel lucky its still running... no offence tho..

Used the Shell fuel save in my last 2 tanks. done about 300 miles this weekend. No different to any other tank that I can tell.

I used it (unleaded) in my last 2.0 Focus and the mpg dropped by 2mpg within 2-3 days :(

didn't really feel any different but it was supposed to get more mpg not less?

I'm dubious about these fuels which promise this and that by using special additives.

I mean Shell add...whatever, lubes or detergent or something to **** with the 'efficiency' of an 'average' engine.

Who has an 'average' engine though? I dunno WTF it's actually gonna do to MY engine. I know MY engine was not specifically designed for this fuel though, so who knows what long term effect it's gonna have?

Was it shell who had to pay out for wrecked engines a few years ago?

It's the same **** probably from the same refinery basically.

This shell product has some extra additives though.

In NI all fuel apparently comes from the same point but with me even knowing that I always find my car to be completely numb and hesitant at low speeds when using Tescos petrol and my MPG goes down too.

I would say its Definitely a fuel issue, this Diesel stuff tends to make engines rattly and noisy in my experience.

It runs poorly on one tank of fuel and then runs fine again - that's because it is an E39. :rolleyes:

It has done it's 90k miles with ease and is barely run in compared to most cars of this mileage.

To the other comments - bear in mind when I was driving the car I had no idea what fuel was in it but noticed, subjectively, the car did not feel as lively as it did on it's normal fuel (also Shell by the way - so not an anti-Shell commentary at all).

The next tank was BP Ultimate and it was back to it's normal and lovely best :D
