Jaguar XJs - 2003/2004/2005
OK The time has come to wave goodbye to by Civic Type R I think.
It's a 55 breadvan model and has been a lot of fun, but having the Scoob as well I don't feel the need for two sporty cars any longer. So I have for a long time handkered after a Jag. A ridiculous replacement I grant you, but some things need to be got out of your system. So anyone know anything about 2003-2005 XJ saloons? I have seen some beauties at around £10K, but wondered if there is anything to look out for. I know servicing and tyres will be silly money, but what of the engine options and trim options. Have seen a black 4.2 with 19"wheels and full interior pack including DVD screens in the rear for £10.5K ... would it be financial suicide? |

Mate, what a great car ! A member of my family used to have a 6.0 V12 TWR XJS !!! It was epic !!!! I love the XJS - hope you find a good 'un and when you do post some pics up !! :thumb:

As it happens I love a lot of the older Jags, the last one being the XJS, but I think today it would be financial suicide to buy one and try and use it as a day to day car. Not even sure the XJ saloon is a great idea LOL! |
Apparently the later aluminium bodied XJ's are pretty reliable ( 4.2 v8 model ).The 4.0ltr v8 has nikasil bores, so have a good poke around them.Timing issues are a problem, with that engine although probably uprgraded now.That Jag forum should give you. a more in depth discussion on XJ's or have a look at the www.pistonheads.com Jag forum.HTH.

Don't let the auto box put you off, on the 4.2 V8 it really suits the car, matches the engine well and is responsive. I preferred it to any Subaru manual gearbox I've tried.

Thanks for the replies. It's a 53 plate, so seven years old, there is a tiny bit of wear on the drivers seat bolster and a small scratch on the off side rear quarter panel, but apart from that it is like new.
Cost me 9995, but got 6000 for my CTR against it so 4000 to change. 12months tax and 12 month warranty too. I am pretty happy at that. Did 32 mpg on the motorway run back too... which was a pleasant surprise. It's a big car, but feels smaller than it is and all the DSC/yaw/traction control does a good job of keeping it stuck to the road. On the way back on the private road I was cruising at 85mph and decided to see what the kickdown was like from there.... hmmmmm..... could lose your licence if you did that ona public road LOL! So different to the CTR it repalced and to the Scoob of course, but vive le difference :D |

What are the servicing costs/intervals on something like this?? ...because that car looks fantastic and as a 'runaround' I doubt you could be sitting in a nicer place. :)

From a Jaguar Independent Specialist using Jaguar parts: 10,000mls. £199 20,000mls. £219 30,000mls. £269 40,000mls. £229 50,000mls. £219 60,000mls. £279 70,000mls. £199 80,000mls. £219 90,000mls. £269 100,000mls. £399 Multiply by about 65% for Jaguar main agent. Tyres are £189 per corner for Pirellis or Michelins are slightly more. Not bad considering the vehicle. A few good ones around at good prices and yes it is a nice place to be. :D |

There is a chrome version or you can get an aftermarket mesh version which might look good actually. Not too expensive either. |
black mesh instead of the current slats would be rather subtle but very nice.
