Theoritaclly if you take the Turbo off the Impreza, would you get a 125hp 2.0L engine?
and in the STI's case a 155hp engine (AVCS)?

No because the 2 litre normally aspirated engine is a single overhead cam and the turbo uses a double overhead cam (well at least here in the UK). Compression ratio is greater on the NA engine too.

The engine is the same except for the obvious fact of the turbo and the various bits which are different to allow the turbo to be fitted ie manifold etc. The basic engine is the same thus explained on the Subaru Impreza video by David Lapworth of Prodrive. The basic engine which allows Subaru to enter the Impreza in the WRC is the same -the difference is the electronics and lighter/race components internally etc. This is all strictly governed by the FIA. Look in the user book, same engine code etc.
Cheerio:)
