Audi A4 Tdi estate, good choice?

Sounds like a dull and pointless question, but, Im in a 99 classic uk turbo at the moment, which is great.

However, aswell as the 2 kids, we took on board a dog last month, and need to look into an estate. Given the scoob is our only car, ive been looking into between a 2004 and 2006 model A4 Tdi estate. Prices and mileages have varied.

Im just wanting to find out if it would be a wise choice, and whether I should keep the scoob aswell, or cry and sell up.

All help is much appreciated, many thanks in advance.

If 2.0 diesel you'll need the 170PS version or you'll hate it.
2.7TDI and 3.0TDI are much pokier but a wee bit thirstier - 3.0TDI is AWD only and a very nice motor.

The 170ps was the one I fancied, better fuel economy etc. And the cost may be too much for anything bigger.

why not get an impreza wrx wagon? much cheaper to buy than the Audi, probably more reliable and AWD. Only downside is the fuel and insurance cost, but you know that already.

I've got an old wrx saloon and an 05 wagon. The wagon just does everything brilliantly, with 25 mpg avg.

170PS version is decent but FWD only.

Test one if you can and also try a similar priced 320d if you can - pretty rapid (177bhp) and very, very good on fuel. You should just about be able to get one for a similar price to an average mileage A4 170 PS.

Overall would the bm or audi be a better choice? I can feel another mooch on autotrader coming on!

Hope its a not a great dane lol

I don't think you'll be looking at the 170bhp 2.0TDi if you're looking at a 2004-6 estate, as that will be the previous B6 shape, so be a case of 110bhp or 130bhp TDi. Both supposed to be decent engines and return good MPG, if a bit noisy.

I used to have a 2002 A4 back in the day, and it was an excellent car in terms of interior build quality etc, but I did have a lot of problems with it. 2.0 petrol engine was terrible, and used loads of oil. Clutch used to 'judder' on cold damp mornings (seems a common issue with Audi's), electrics were a bit dodgy - speakers would cut out sometimes etc. Still reckon they're a good bet tho if you get a diesel one.

Nah, a labrador cross rottweiler, old git that he is!! We are also moving to inverness soon, and if we travel back to her mums, the diesel estate would be better. Do I keep the scoob as my 'toy' or sell her?

Matteeboy 22 September 2010 08:54 PM

Kris - slightly different "level" but I compared the B7 A4 3.0TDI to the 330d - the BM was lighter, had more boot space, was quicker, better on fuel and had lower emissions.

The 320d is well worth a look - it's a near genius engine combining plenty of oomph with very good emissions and mpg and it's a balanced RWD chassis compared to a front heavy FWD one.

The A4 is definitely desirable - looks nice, lots of toys, etc, but IMO the BM gives it a good shoeing.

Ill have a look and see. Really dont want to sell the scoob though.

I'd go for the Quattro version myself. Having just come back from touring around the northern reaches of Scotland where there were reports of snow... I'd rather have the 4WD (like what I got :D )

krisando 22 September 2010 09:07 PM

All depends on the money side. I may have up to 8k to spend, hopefully. On my wages I couldnt afford to have one on finance, and if i come into the cash, ill be sorted.

Ill have to have a look further into it, and really like the look of the A4.

hodgy0_2 22 September 2010 09:21 PM

A4's do look lovely -- but it's the FWD drive, on such a "large" car that put me off

i bet the 320d is a better drive - if not car

A more packaged bunched up 'cuse for an estate you really couldnt wish for

why not go the whole hog and get an A3

So, being serious for a minute, which diesel estate would you think would be the better to go for? Im open to suggestions, if they are serious.

dpb 23 September 2010 08:06 AM

Id go for 3 litre diesel 5 series bmw , you will get one jus about for that money :thumb:

The A4 is suprisingly small inside for a large looking car . I have a Passat TDi 130 sport estate I use for work , they are basically the same car underneath , but the passat is a lot larger inside , and it looks a lot better on the 19's and pimp tints :D
