iPhone (or Blackberry) VoIP?

I have a geographic number that I use with either the SIP capabilities of my router or SipGate x-lite.

Can I connect to a SIP account from an iPhone or Blackberry? With IOS4 it would (or should) be possible to have an application running in the background that can ring.

Steve,
Have a read of this and see if they are any good.

Just note that VoIP will use your data allowance up, if its just for free calls abroad and your not bothered by quality (as its lower grade voice with far more bandwidth useage than a normal call) then its probably worth it, if your a high data user anyway then I would be weary as you may be hit with some excessive charges.

Markus, thank you for the information.

TruPhone is pretty good and does what I want apart from the fact it doesn't run in the background (and either does Skype) as they can't get it to work properly. That is a shame as it would be a great way to get free VoIP calls.

Skype doesn't work properly? Seems to work fine in the background here, calls and messages come through. I use it extensively as I'm never in the country and have a Skype in number.

Skype works perfectly in the background, I get calls all the time on it

If you google around about the way Apple has implemented multitasking it is quite difficult for these programs to stay alive.

Skype works for 10-15 minutes and then disconnects itself, Truphone has disabled it and Acrobits has a detailed explaination here: http://www.acrobits.cz/tutorials/ios...its-softphone/

I think Skype works, the explanation given at Acrobits states that there's only a problem if the App uses UDP, TCP works fine. Skype is no doubt as dirty on the iPhone as it is on the Workstation and will use anything it can.
