Brakes....
 

on my way home from work i felt a juddering when i was braking and also a shaking of the steering wheel at about 60 mph.

got home and all i could smell was my brakes. had a look and i came to the conclusion that my drivers side brake is sticking a fair bit. Got a 2nd opinion from the old man and i was right. :luxhello:

so now as this has happened i want to do a disc brake upgrade, with new callipers, wanted to do it anyway. Not this soon but hey, its gonna have to be now.

just want some advice of a decent set that is not stupidly expensive but not cheap! maybe something around the £350-£400 mark. Or any websites where i can find some.

And what size could i go up too on 17" wheels. Car is 1999 V reg impreza turbo.

Ian Godney does reconditioned 4pots on here. Might be worth upgrading to these.

what is the difference between how many pots there are, i don't really understand it all. also what size could i go up to on my car. have seen some grooved Brembo discs and they are 326mm. i love the look of big brakes lol

pots is the number of pistons the caliper has.

Another vote for Godspeed. Ian also does a kit that allows the SUBARU embossed 4-pots to use 300+mm discs.

They are pretty good at that too.

as for the sizes, your wheels can hold you back there. you may need to upgrade to fit certain sizes under them etc...... one of those brain damage tasks i leave to the experts ;)

in the kit there is all the bits and bobs needed to fit bigger pads into the calipers you already have, also parts needed space the calipers to fit around the bigger discs.

does yours have 4 pots?

i have no idea to be honest. they are standard brake calipers.

A 1999 car will have 4 pots as standard , but it is very common now for these calipers to be sticking or seized which sounds like has happened to yours , the 335mm kit on our web site is a very good powerful kit , but as you keep your existing calipers , your calipers would need reconditioning before it could be fitted.
With the budget you mention above , you would be struggling to get a big brake kit , you may find some second hand sti gold brembo's with standard discs and pads , but you may find they won't fit under your wheels without fitting wheel spacers as they are chunky calipers , and foul on the spokes of most wheels.

If you are looking to keep the size your have , I can recondition your calipers , or supply you a pair on an exchange basis , these would cost you £195 , I could supply you our grooved discs and kevlar fast road pads for £99 a set , depending on your use , we can also supply harder pads for harder road use or track days.

look on the calipers , there will be circular sticky out bits (technical description)
if you have 2 circles you have 4 pots, 3 - 6pot, 4 - 8pot and so on.

no idea about classic turbos, just for some reason thought they didnt have 4 pots standard.
im probably completely wrong though.

i think i have four pots. but not totally sure.

Ok will speak to you tomorrow , 4 pots have the word subaru on the outside face of them , if its a 99 car , they should have 4 pots

Early classics didn't, facelift classics MY99 on (and I believe a handful of MY98's might have too) did.

I've heard circular sticky out bits used as a technical term before at a plastic surgeons consultation

My STi 5 has recently had refurbed 4-pots fitted...... but car pulls to right a tad when braking hard. :Whatever_ It's a bit disconcerting, as it upsets the balance of the car when braking into bends. Don't like it one bit lol. :(

Do you sell a full seals/pistons, etc. overhaul kit for the 4-pots?

With that budget in mind I would buy a seal kit from your local Subaru dealer, change the seals and inspect the pistons to see if they are okay. I changed the seals on mine (pistons were sticking) and pistons were fine. Seals cost around £25 from Subaru.

This will give you a plenty to play with for the discs/pads and with change left over.

If your wheels allow, fit Brembo calipers, so much better than the standard setup and uses a decent sized disc.

Who did the calipers ? they shouldn't play up if they were recently done.

Yes I can supply you pistons and seals , I do the stainless steel pistons for £15 each or £100 a set , and the axle seal sets for £39.50

I bought them off eBay. They have been at least painted etc... but would appear they weren't overhauled internally, as advertised. :Whatever_


So is it therefore £139.50 for everything needed to overhaul both calipers (i.e. £100 for 8 s.s. pistons and £39.50 for all the seals)... plus the P&P?

P&P is £8.50 , I have them in stock for next day delivery if you need them
