at what point would you avoid a car because of mileage ?

is 70-90k with fsh a safe bet or is this considered quite high ?

I would consider say a 8 yr old car with 80k on the clock acceptable mileage.
But to consider it, it would need FSH with important receipts documented like cambelt (possibley twice depending on when first was done)

Depends how much of the loud pedal you are going to use aswell i guess.
For someone who has a car for A-B journeys with an occasional A-Road blast it wouldnt be quite as important to someone who intended to frequent trackdays and SantaPod etc.

assuming it had fsh and well looked after how long would an enigine be expected to last ?

i know its a how longs a piece of string type thing but i guess i jaut want to know that if im buying something with 70-90k is it very likely to go bang ?

these cars can do over 2oo thousand on the original engine if not messed with fsh a must

Exactly... i have seen Scooby Engines go 150k fine, and some blow at 50k.
By having a look at paperwork and getting a general feel for how the car has been looked at you are more hedging your bets on a good one (in theory ;) )

Mine has 138k (98 uk turbo 2000) with no issues other than the usual rust along the top edge of the screen. Had 112k on it when i bought it last year so had averaged about 10k a year. Stacks of history, all the right intervals, you could tell that it was well loved from the things the previous owner had bought/had done to it.

Less mods the better for longevity as a general rule, though don't discount ones that have lots of changes done properly and carefully. If you're planning on modifying yourself, then a lower mileage example would obviously be better

i had a 55 PLATE WRX WITH PPP bought at 2 years old and sold at 41/2 years with 55 thousand on clock still going strong, now got a 2007 sti type uk with factory fitted ppp had done 9 thousand in april this year when i bought it full service hsitory got to the end of july done 12000 miles engine dies bearings shot waiting for it back with new short engine under warranty...

My '03 wrx running around 280bhp for half its life and 320bhp for the second half still going strong and just clocked over 100,000 miles. Has had one new clutch at around 60k and does need another now. Many motorway miles but does get driven hard every now and again. Hate to think what it is worth with this mileage. I have a big wodge of paperwork for all the servicing and mods carried out at a well known specialist. So I would look for good service history and not be put off too much by mileage. A lot of lower mileage cars may well get driven hard at weekends only.
