alloy welding?
 

what sort of welder would i need.

i want something making, but some places i checked want silly money
so i want to do it my self.

i did hear that you use a tig, but want to make sure of this.
the metal to make what i need is next to nothing to buy, but one place wanted in excess in £200s

the metal i priced at around £26

any advice/type of welder needed, would be great:thumb:

as said, its not that hard to weld, just practice.

and from whats said, a tig is better as its not as high, so dont burn holes as easy as say mig.

the last time i did anything like this, was in the hay day at school

Eldest used to make lorry trailers for "Weightlifter" in Scunny, out of alloy. All welding there is done with MIG welders.

PM me if you want me to ask him about it, if you can get hold of a welder, he'd do it for you if you crossed his palm with silver;) Whereabouts in Notts?

welding ally without a tig welder is apparently a big pain in the back side.

Firstly, how thick is the metal you're planning to weld? Welding aluminium takes serious power, so if you're planning on welding something thick you best have a decent welding kit and a good power supply (3 phase).

If you're going down the TIG route, then an AC/DC tig welder, which you need for ally, is also quite an expensive piece of kit. Much more than the 200 you've been quoted :)

If you're welding using MIG, then you need a MIG welder that can feed the wire fast enough, which is also not a given on hobby type machines.


Once my current project is finished, I'll be saving up for a TIG welder, and realistically I'm going to have to spend on the wrong side of 1k to get anything half decent.

Your talking a 2k for a 200amp AC/DC tig welder single phase for house use and a heavy cable from the junction box aswell and a lot of money if you use it a couple of time .You need AC/DC plant because Ac is what you use for welding alloy with a Tig welder and blunt end with tungsten ,Dc for mild steel and stainless steel and a tungsten with pencil point for Dc and there is different tungstens for alloy and steels .

the part im after making aint that big.

and the thickness will only be a couple of mm
i made a bypass air box out of fibre glass, im after this made in alloy
the tig welder i've looked at is only a cheapy thing. but for what its for, should do the job

i live in carlton, there was a guy that made items out of alloy on here.
the header tank was only £60 so thought, this should be around the same sort of price.

if i was able to get it made resonable cheap, then great. but clark welder from what im told are a gret bit of kit for the price, and ive seem persons use them with no issue

i like to get my hands in there.

in calton mate, im open to any ideas mate.
again, the welder i was looking at was only a cheap type one. but the alloy would have only been a couple of mm.

so should cope with that with no issues.
