Take the solenoid out:
- standing in front of the car (MY99) it at the left side near the wheel / damper
- take the tubes of
- take the electronic connector of
- take the solenoid out
- spray it with some carburator cleaner
- put 12V on it and spray it again (be carefull with sparks / carburator cleaner is flammable)
- put the solenoid back
- put the tubes and electronic connector on it
Finished.

You can remove it as it says above but leave it connected to the wiring loom. Then connect the 2 green connectors under the dash and turn the ignition on so the lights show but not to start it! This puts the car in a check routine and the solenoid will start clicking as will the cooling fan. while this is clicking spray carburetor or brake cleaner in both pipe holes.
DONT FORGET to disconect the 2 green connectors after turning the ignition off when youve finished.

This only applies if you have 2 green connectors under the dash because I am not sure about early WRX models. I will be corrected by someone if I am wrong.

Hope this helps Stuart

thanks people.

steps are very organised. one question though *embarassed look*, how does the solenoid look like. how can i identify it from the car?

is it connected to turbo? dump valve?

the only stuff i've manged to do on the car is changing the dump valve and exhaust, so no clue how a solenoid looks like. sorry...

i have just had to clean my solenoid due to 6-7 psi boost :(
all i did was take the top and bottom pipes off of the solenoid and used brake cleaner sprayed into the top of the solenoid and watched it come out of the bottom pipe and HEY PRESTO my boost is back!!!!!!
the solenoid is located on the drivers side suspension turret, small brass cylinder with a electrical connector on top tith one small hose at the top and one fatter hose at the bottom....
