Hyundai coupe -51 plate - starting problems ??
 

Guys, any idea on the following -wife`s 51 plate hyundai coupe decided to not start last night, it had been driven to tesco left for around 30 minutes and then when she went to start it nothing, just a rapid series off clicking noises ie. engine would not even begin to turn over. shoved the jump leads on and car and tried to start her, straight away the car started up and continued to drive it the 1-2 mile home without any problem.

gave the battery a good overnight charge and started first time this morning. going to the local garage tomorrow for an oil and filter change and going to get them to check the battery out whilst I am there but just wonder what the likely problem will be and the best way to determine what it actually is without spending out on new batterys / new starter motor / alternator etc ??

Get a multimeter across the battery and check it yourself

Sounds like the battery to me. As above, get a multimeter on it, you want at least 12.2 volts from it with the engine turned off. Disconnect the coils or pull all the plug leads off, noting what goes where for reassembly. Crank the engine over whilst looking at the multimeter, it should crank for 15 seconds without going below 9 volts, if it does, or it stops cranking, you need a new battery.

Also test alternator output you should be getting at least 14 volts with the engine running

Okay guys appreciatte the advice, as I say was going to the garage today anyway to get an oil and filter change for the car so got them to check the battery, seems it was showing as 45% and unservicable so a new battery was bought !!
