track day noise levels

im expecting to use my car at scoobyshootout, i believe the noise limit is circa 101db, do mot stations have facility to carry out noise level checks? how far away from the vehicle and at what rpm do the stewards test? and if peeps cars are over this level (some noisy bloody cars on track lol), do they put the bung in whilst stewards are doing inspections and then remove it after?

Not sure where you can test it, if you need a bung to drop your level then you have to keep it in, and I dont think its as high as 101db, maybe more like 95 or 96db.
They will black flag you though if you exceed the limit on track.

Tony:)

When you race at castle combe its 4500RPM at half a meter away and sure Tony is right by 96db

Check out your local track and get it tested properly :)

on the scoobyshootout threads in events, im sure it was confirmed as 101db for elvington, i will double check - me thinks!

I suspect the above noise limit for Elvington is correct as stated above. :)

You can buy noise meters from the likes of Maplins. I have one. :)

For Javelin trackdays at Elvington it's a 98db static test and 87db drive by test, SSO may have different limits though. Specific requirements do differ from venue to venue, I've been tested at 4.5k, 5k, 5.2k, etc, etc.

The best bit of advice I can give you is....don't assume that if you have your car tested at venue A and the reading is 95db it will be 95db when you have it tested at venue B. :Whatever_

In my experience noise testing carried out by motorsport scrutineers is not what you'd call an exact science! :D

checked the thread and madhammer, although not 100% sure says 101db

What exhaust do you have fitted?

Last time I did SSO my car passed the noise limit with a Nur Spec R fitted, NO bung.

Glad this topic has come about, i have been wondering as well about the db's etc. As & when my cars sorted i would like to go around Oulton Park on a track day & its 110db there & i have a fujitsubo 3" angled exit system & waiting for Ed @ japspeed to get his sports cats in - again 3" but both narrow to 2.5" to fit together.
So i am wondering how to get mine tested. Dont want to pay for the track & then find its too loud, would be gutted!

blitz nur spec r - but will be modified to take 2.5" reduction out before then, so full 3" exhaust, open neck de-cat downpipe, rcm headers, larger turbo up pipe, md321h turbo, all in all, a rather loud setup lol. im going to purchase a db meter, off ebay - looks ok, for about 20 snots.

Buy a quiter exhaust system. Loud doesnt necessarily mean powerful.

Mine was tested at TOTB at 87db

Be careful what you buy..... you could be wasting your cash. Cheap is dear and dear is cheap, as they say! :D

This is the one I bought from Maplins -> http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=34518
