My new house has a number of brass fittings (fire surround being an example). Given it is all new I don't want to replace it but I hate brass and want it silver/chrome/black... anything but brass in fact.

Can you paint brass and if so what do you need to do?

Only time I've painted brass was at sea. We sanded it, undercoated it, and then painted it. Still chips off though. Need to speak to an expert. Or buy new fittings.

Etch-primer ?

I was going to sugest etch primer... but its normally used on alloy?? what sort of paint are you using?? not brush on??

Try a car paint supplier... such as autopaint.. I could name others but these would be in leeds..

You will need to use a primer suitable for metal and then use a metal paint (eg Hammerite), alternatively you could use an enamel spray which come in any finish you care to mention. Garage door paint may also be good. Check Homebase, I think they have a very nice peweter coloured metallic paint. PS good idea to remove any traces of brass cleaner/ polish first, otherwise paint wont stick very well.

You probably need to watch out if the fire surround gets hot - that may cause the paint to do nasty things like crack or discolour. :eek:

You might want to try and find somebody who will electro plate the brass for you with another metal.
