Just getting a few insurance quotes tonight as my renewal is through for next week.

By accident I entered the wrong reg number in and it came up with a Escort 1.3 or something (bloody fully comp was £231 as well  )

I then went on to enter all my old car reg's to see if they were still there. It came up with the right details, including my 1985 MG Metro I had 11 years back.

So how up-to-date is the system? Does it mean the car is still running, or do they not delete the old files? Curious as one of them was smashed to bits (205 GTi) and still appears on the records.

Does this mean if some body sees my car and enters the reg in the forum your talkin about,it will give them my address and name etc?
If so this is not good

It just comes up with the make and model of the car. Most online insurance quotes have the facility to return this info. Interestingly mine comes up as a My01 WRX or an MY01 GX. It's a pain when some insurers just take the first alphabetically and quote on it. Managed to get a quote for £400 fully comp, suffice to say they would n't honour it:(

Not sure how up to date it is, a mate of mine has the same service provided by HPI to his Orange WAP service. Not connected with motor trade, I believe its free.

Looked up all my old cars, and some of my Dad's;).

It's worth double checking that your car details are correct because the DVLA database does have errors in it.

I've heard tails of 9.0 litre Volvo's and 1995 registered Capris etc

First off, it isn't a DVLA database - it's maintained by the Association of British Insurers. It only returns the make and model (and the ABI code) of the car not any ownership details

I'm writing an web insurance system at the moment for multi-million pound clients. Got some famous people on the books, but you should see the cars they all have! Aston Martin Vanquishess, Ferrari F50s... everything!

Hmmm - so the ABI don't get their information from the DVLA - they maintain their own independent database?

I must admit I find that surprising! - Why go to all the effort to build a database from scratch when there is a government agency doing the job at the time of the car's first registration?

The DVLA supply data from their database to other organisations such as the SMMT, Experian and Equifax, so why not the ABI?

I'll bow to your superior knowledge on this one, but please tell me more - I'd be interested in your comments.

Cheers

Rich :)
