Engine problems?

Hi all!

Went out for a drive tonight, car was fine to begin with (Blobeye 2005 STi), but then driving home, gave it a bit and the car juddered violently and seemed to have lost most of its power.

It SEEMED to be happening when the turbo kicked in, but I cant be certain of that.

It has been absolutely belting it down with rain tonight just before this happened, could that be the cause or could it be something totally different?

Judt got it home and on the last stretch of road I gave it a bit again and it was only just hesitating and seemed most of the power was back.

Does this ring any bells to anyone?

Cheers!
Chris

boost cut?

Has it been mapped or is it standard

I see you have a Spec R exhaust, is this cat back or turbo back.

Any CEL?

Hi mate,

It hasn't been mapped (at least not since I bought it). I'm not sure if the exhaust is cat back or turbo back so I'll describe the setup... Theres the turbo, then the downpipe with cat in it, then there should be another cat but there isnt because theres a decat pipe there, then theres the spec r exhaust.

Theres been no CEL light at all, thats when I'll crap myself, when I see that.

Now you've said boost cut, thats exactly what it felt like.

Its only happened this one time, during torrential rain. I left the car for a couple of hours after that, and tried it again, and its working fine again now.

What do you think it could be?

Cheers!
Chris

cat back exhaust then :thumb:

Boost cut would be a sharp jolt almost like hitting a rev limiter... usually followed by a CEL though...

Sounds like water got in somewhere it shouldn't have. If it's ok now, then I wouldn't worry.

I did drive mine through miles of torrential rain along the M40 on Saturday with no problems, though (other than major aquaplaning!)

sharpy2010 20 August 2010 02:23 PM

There was definitely no CEL, I'm certain of that. The juddering (which was quite violent) only happened when it felt like the turbo was either kicking in or about to kick in. I'm going to have to put it down to the rain I suppose, unless it happens again when it isn't raining...

I don't like doing that tho, if something happens like that on a car, it usually doesn't fix itself!!!

Thanks for the help so far, much appreciated!!

Yeah the rain and surface road water was really really bad, so I think its best to say for now that it mustve been that, unless it happens again.

These cars are awesome when theyre working, but when something goes wrong its like "oh my god, how much is this going to cost this time" lol!!!

HT leads? (Or whatever newage STI's have)

sharpy2010 20 August 2010 02:29 PM

I don't know a lot about cars, other than how to drive them, but browsing on the net made me think it could be the following -: HT Leads, Spark plugs, water in the MAF sensor.

I guess though that water in another place it shouldn't be could also cause the same issues.

I'm really hoping thats all it is. The car is under warranty from the dealership I bought it from, but I'd much rather it just carried on working without having the grief of getting any issues fixed (which they'll probably try to squirm out of paying for!).

I think STI's have coil packs not HT leads... worth getting them checked... if they have the same symptoms as a dodgy HT lead, with wet and high loads, then 1st place to check.

sharpy2010 20 August 2010 02:34 PM

Ok cheers! Is a coil pack something that can just be checked, or is it a "throw away whats there and fit new ones" type of check?

Also, any idea on likely cost? I may just get some new ones in anyway, as a precaution!

sharpy2010 20 August 2010 02:37 PM

I've found THIS: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Subaru-Impreza...es_CarParts_SM

I'd rather new, but this seems to fit the bill. Is this what I'm looking for?

Could I fit it myself, or is that a mechanics job?

Cheers!
