as you know the calipers on the new car are black with subaru in white.

as anyone had probs with the black paint coming off?

mine at the front are nearly all silver and the rears are starting to go, i know its just a cosmetic thing but they look cr*p :(

also there is a flaw in the casting on one of the front calipers that looks like a crack but i think its just a casting defect (i hope)

Cheers

Steve

My MY00 ones did exacly the same. I've now painted them in Hamerite smooth finish and they look much better. It's just a bit of a pain in the ar8e to pick out the Subaru. I did mine in black with Subaru in silver.

Hi, Mine are doing exactly the same thing - turning silver. I put it down to the wheel cleaner (Auto Glym) which like Wonder Wheels is a mild acid cleaner. Great for brake dust but not for calipers. Hammerite sounds like a good idea. Sounds a bit agricultural though, would like to see a pic before touching my baby.

RaceCarRiot 04 April 2002 01:23 AM

mine do the same as well...will it actually harm the caliper, or just make it look like ****e?

if it's just a cosmetic thing, i'm not too concerned about it...but if i'm doing harm to my brakes, i'd like to know. ;)

Steve.

This isn't my brakes they belong to Jerome. Shows what good results you can get by just painting the calipers with quality paint.

Jerome

Sorry for stealing your pic ;)

What paint are people using ?
Surely Hammerite will come off when the brakes get hot?
Anybody used hammerite & done track days ?

i went to halfords last nite and they have a dedicated caliper paint in black, blue, red and silver oh yes and YELLOW

looks a bit 'glossy' i quite like the matt black of the original

Nathan L 04 April 2002 01:19 PM

Steve if you like matt black then get BBQ paint.

I used this on my old Punto GT calipers and it lasted for years, even using Wonder Wheels and Autoglym.

Same happened to me on old car.
on new one I liberally covered the wheels(removed) with car polish.
Let it dry 5 mins then lightly buff.(I used Mer)
Now I never use wheelcleaner and the dust easily comes off with warm water and a soft brush.
Try it...

My front MY01 calipers have gone silver too and again it's down to Wonderwheels. Wonderful on wheels but sh1te on calipers! :D
Steve001 - I see you live in Chester. Are you going to the big one on sunday? If so,there's a gang of us meeting up in Warrington and heading down there if you're interested? Drop me a mail or post on here and we can sort something out :)
Nath - Wot colour GT did you have then? I had a broom yellow with the anthracite wheels (Brand new and only kept it for six months and part ex'ed it for a bmw coupe!) It didn't stand a chance against my highly modded uno turbo (Which incidentally, has been in Max Power many moons ago :D:D:D )

Cheers,

Nick..

P.S: Nath - I've ordered my STi foglamp covers today from UPAuto, they've just received them in stock today (Thursday) ;)

Special "Caliper" Paint is a RIPP OFF. either hammerite/smoothrite will work perfectly, or Even normal aerosol works fine. The caliper body will rarely get that hot. It is only in close proximity to hot things. Unlesss you are mad braking then come to a standstill immediately with the brakes cooking, then there is plenty of airflow to keep your paint cool
