Not a ban!! (a very remote possibility of working away).

LOL .. give it to a mate

Imagine what you'd do if someone gave you a car for a year. He'd thrash the nuts off it.

Personally, I'd garage it. As long as it's given a run every know and again it'll be fine. I garaged my old Golf for 6mths before I sold it.

I was told to watch for the brakes siezing and the oil settling at the bottom of the sump?!? Me mum drove the car to her work and back (20-mile round-trip) every month just to make sure the battery was charged and everything ticked over nicely.

Stefan

P.S. Don't forget to complete a SORN if you're not keeping her taxed ;)

If you knew you could not use your Scoob for a year (and mine's a UK300 with only 9k) what would you do with it, sell it, garage it, loan it to a mate or what... advice please.

MATTeL 03 April 2002 03:03 PM

Why can't you use it for a year?

DJ Dunk 03 April 2002 03:04 PM

Personally . . . I'd garage it :)

Wouldn't let any of my mates drive it  ;)

MATTeL 03 April 2002 03:05 PM

I would have go with DJ Dunk.

DJ Dunk 03 April 2002 03:06 PM

 :o

Dr Lurve 03 April 2002 03:07 PM

What about brakes seizing up, flat spotting tyres etc

MATTeL 03 April 2002 03:10 PM

Well you could arrange for it to be maintained and shifted around while it was in storage.

DJ Dunk 03 April 2002 03:12 PM

. . . ask the local Vicar to pop it around the block a few times every weekend ;)

Paulo P 03 April 2002 03:13 PM

garage it and leave the handbrake off, put it on axle stands so the tyres don't flat spot, disconnect the battery etc and it should be ok :) My friend stored his rolls royce on its tyres for about 18 months and they did flat spot but one blast down to the coast soon sorted that out. Brakes etc shouldn't seize on a car that age anyway. Is someone going to be able to keep an eye on it for you?

ChrisB 03 April 2002 03:20 PM

Best to find a good friend who will take it out for a decent blast once a month.

Doesn't petrol go off if you leave for a long time?

Disco 03 April 2002 03:21 PM

I would definitely lend it to a close personal friend who makes great hash browns for breakfast ....LOL:D:D:D

Seriously (first suggestion was serious too, if you're up for it;)) though, I would sell it if you can get a good price, bank the money for the year and rebuy when you return. That way you avoid depreciation, and gain a few £'s in interest too!

mattstant 03 April 2002 04:15 PM

"Doesn't petrol go off if you leave for a long time? "

Yes i can confirm that it does.
My father has a truly ancient morris oxford circa 1936 which hadn't been moved for about ten years.
An enthusiastic mechanic we new tried everything to get it restarted without sucess till he completely drained the tank and refilled with petrol and she started first turn of the key.

Carlos The Jackel 03 April 2002 04:22 PM

:D the value will probably drop in a year so sell it and buy another when you get back - its not as if they are hard to come by:D

carl 03 April 2002 04:22 PM

I'm local -- I'll look after it for you ;)

Seriously, I'd sell it. Even though it's garaged, it will depreciate so if you sell it now you could get something better in a year's time than if you sold it then (if you see what I mean).

Sell now, keep the money, buy 9k-old STi in 1 year's time.

yoza 03 April 2002 04:24 PM

Take it with you,or is that comment compleatly stupid?
Tell me your going workin the rigs,or the space station or some thing!:D

SHESCOOBY 03 April 2002 04:30 PM

Jen I will look after it for you
it will be safe in my hands

LG John 03 April 2002 05:43 PM

Rent it!!

Richard Askew 03 April 2002 05:44 PM

Jen - sod moving and stay here... :D

Knowlesy 03 April 2002 08:11 PM

Jen, whilst I'd hate to see you go away for a year I have a double gargage, & have enough room for another scoob.

I could run it out every now & again
get it serviced for you
clean it weekly

let me know......

Dr Lurve 03 April 2002 09:29 PM

Thanks everyone for your advice and offers of help, very much appreciated. Once again work may take me to the US for a while, but I have not quite decided on that yet.

Selling would probably be the most sensible option, but heartbreaking, especially since UK217 just proved herself v. an M5 (hehehehe) and do I really need to be sensible??

I'll keep you posted.. re outcome, thanks again, Jen.

Dr Lurve 04 April 2002 06:45 AM

ttt to say thanks to all. Jen.

David_Wallis 04 April 2002 07:18 AM

dont worry, at least you could drive it... Ive got a 12month ban... and I just have to look at it sitting in the garage...

David

bumcrack 04 April 2002 10:30 AM

flog it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
flog now

Brake Neck 04 April 2002 11:25 PM

Jen? is it??
I too have UK300. A double garage. TWINS eh!!!! Now that would be nice, really piss of some of my married with ??? neighbours, having two in the garage. And right next to the R1 and the Aprilia.
Everything is security alarmed of course. (and central heated).
So where abouts in the USofA are you going? I have a nice home in Santa Monica (got back last week as the Scooby gets lonely, I have to commute cos of this u see).
Anyway, if your UK300 wants a nice home and a friend for a while then it can come and keep mine company. And you never know, maybe there'll be three when you get back ????

Mufasa 05 April 2002 12:30 AM

I would sell it, bank the money, get another on your return.
Limit the depreciation now instead of losing more on it...
No costs of storage, still got to be insured...

And you could end up staying away for longer, what happens then?

Muf

HELLOM8 05 April 2002 07:31 AM

You could put in one of those car baby sitting places. Big warehouse type thing, where they keep it clean and drive it round the block every so often. Or you could give it to me.

Dr Lurve 05 April 2002 03:46 PM

Yeah I know sell it is sensible, but it would be heartbreaking, and getting a second scoob would not be a thrilling as the first. Still got a while to decide tho.
