AMG up to their old tricks!

They got a bit of stick for changing their old supercharged/turbo? engines for na ones. So they've gone back to forced induction and the new one has 550BHP and 600 torques! The last AMG egine found its way into the C class as well, if they do that again it'll be a hoot!

I think this new S has the wet clutch first seen on the E63 AMG to give proper sporty changes

Anyway, shame its £100k but I wouldn't mind one in a couple of years time(except by then they'll have changed the shape, so it'll seem old!)

Pointless car.

It's an expensive luxury muscle car basically.

The engine belongs in a track weapon not a boat.

Dingdongler 10 August 2010 09:29 AM

Err no it doesn't. An engine like that would be too big and heavy for a trackday weapon. A trackday car should be as light as possible and so an engine like this is needed in a ultra fast luxury cruiser. Which is funnily enough what AMG have done.

I'm sure it'll find its way into the SL as well, ie an ultra fast luxury GT.

Depends upon your definition of a trackday car. Plenty of race cars use big V8's.

A luxury cruiser does not need this sort of power.

It's total excess for no point other than peacocking.

Dingdongler 10 August 2010 10:14 AM

1) Its a sad fact of life that some people will deem anything they can't attain as unnecessary

2) Which 'trackday weapons' have near 600 BHP twin turbo charged V8 engines?

3) You never answered my question on that other thread about which countries you thought currently had what you termed 'high culture'

john banks 10 August 2010 10:31 AM

There is something hilarious about a massive forced induction engine in a luxury car even if it looked like a Renault Laguna on the outside (perhaps especially if it did). I get it completely. Enjoy it before the greenies stop it.

SO it's value is it's price? It's an expensive vanity bauble?

Matteeboy 10 August 2010 11:37 AM

I love it and almost everything AMG builds.

Why not have a comically quick luxobarge with a thundering nutter of an engine? I "get" it and love it - it has a slight air of "sleeper" about it - always a plus IMO.

Far better than a base spec BMW/Merc/Audi with tarted up M Sport/AMG/S-Line bodykit bolted on.

Coffin Dodger 10 August 2010 12:17 PM

Nice

If I were to win the lottery that would be high on the list of choices for a daily driver. Ferraris, Lambos etc. for all other purposes :)

How about why?

Doing 0-60 in 4.1 seconds is hardly a luxurious experience.

You're either a rather poor excuse for a troll, or you have some big hang ups in life :lol1:

Is everything you can't afford a "vanity bauble" ?

But you don't have to all the time ;) Having that sort of power available just makes it all quite effortless and that it what makes it luxurious. Of course if you want to try it out on the autobahns then there is nothing stopping you :D

I just thinking about what sort of person buys a car just because it costs more than most people can afford.

Let's be honest - this car's aimed at Autobahn/GT cruising.

Most will be sold in the Middle East and to current Merc-owners (imho)

Mental car that isn't my cup-of-tea. But I can appreciate the luxury involved.
And £100K for this type of thing is pretty good.
Those who can afford it will justify and purchase.

Those who can't, wont.

Simple.

And you are assuming that everyone who buys them does so because they "cost more than most people can afford", as opposed buying them because they want one for what it is and have the resources to do so even if it does cost more than most people can afford?

Huge difference

The former may well be Permiership footballers and other such arseholses, in which case the tag "vanity bauble" may well apply, whereas the latter are simply weathly or resourceful individuals who want a big, fast, barge, in which case the tag "vanity bauble " couldn't be further from the truth.

However the manner in which you phrased your thoughts suggests that you do indeed have a massive chip on your shoulder.

1) No I was not assuming that but was responsing to an assertion above.

2) No person needs that sort of power in a barge for cruising.

3) What is being resourceful a reason to want this car??

Matteeboy 10 August 2010 03:07 PM

So then Tony, why did you get an STi and a Nissan R33? Surely you don't need all that power in a shopping hatch and a rice rocket?

Super barges have been around for many years - maybe some want luxury and continent crushing power in one car?

Probably more useful than a trackday special that can't carry any luggage. Or a luxobarge with a tiny engine that hardly moves.

I'm willing to bet my STi is faster around a tight track and my R33 is getting a forged engine so it would smoke that AMG.:thumb:
