my old my96's engine and bay aren't looking too good. What is a good method to use to go through and clean this area properly. I've heard gunk is good, but what about getting in and really cleaning bits? I'd really like it to look quite new. I would also like to replace my hoses with nice blue ones so which ones are good and easy to fit for an club-hand like me?

Have a look at what Wax Wizard did to Puff's car.

i saw the thread, and it looks wicked. i wonder what the engine bay looked like before though! my engine has corrosion on the surface of the metal parts and is generally messy. what can I do on my day off to make it all nice and shiny? I'd rather do it myself but need a guide as to what to do if anyone can help?

Did you pressure wash it, and if so what did you cover?

I fancy doing mine but am a bit worried I get stranded at the pressure wash :o

Did you use a power washer??

Its the only way I know of getting it that clean!!

And, yes, what did you cover? was the engine running while you jet washed it??

I have done cars in the past - older ones without all the gumf as under the Impreza Bonnet and left the engine running - the steam that comes off the exhaust really does wonders with the bay

PTMW has never had anything done to engine bay (cleaning wise) and as a result was very black and grimey.

The multiclean will dissolve cosmoline as well as grease etc and is safe on the alloys and bodywork as well. It can also be used for a variety of other things like upholstery cleaning and spot removal from carpets etc.

i covered the alternator in a plastic bag, sprayed liberally with gunk. worked it around with some stiff brushes and rags, then sprayed with fine spray of water. then wiped and cleaned and repeated this two or three times. warmed the engine up first, not too hot but warm. then left the bonnet up in the sun to dry it all off, then off for a fast blast to blow dry!
