Run flat tyres debate

Hey guys,

My brother has a Cooper S GP and iv suggested takes the run flat tyres off it and replaces them with toyo proxy 4's (good all round tyre) MOT time and they need replacing.

This has sparked off a debate at work as one of the guys whole heartidly believes that run flat tyres handle better than non run flats.

I dont believe this is the case due to experience but id be intersted in peoples thoughts down to experience or some scientific theory.

I've no scientific reasons or experience for that matter but common sense tells me a tyre designed to run with no air in it would have a poorer performance than a tyre which is solely designed to run with air in it ?

No ?

Check out all the Bmw forums they all pretty much concur that runflats are crap!

Run flat technology use reinforced sidewalls.

For opt handling tyres will respond better with a little "flex" in the sidewall

hence why run flats arnt used in motor racing

I thought the title said

" run flat tyres deflate " :)

Run flats are not used in motor racing because of the weight, no other reason for it, they are heavy little buggers, and all the strength isnt in the sidewall ;) if you want a tyre with a stiff sidewall, just look at the RE070.
Remember that cars like the mini cooper, BMW M3 etc handle like a bag of nails  or do the have run flats because they dont have a spare tyre? ;)

Tony:)
