What is considered a "launch"?

Could be a silly question but is just terminology really....

Ive been looking at posts on juddering clutches and see a lot of mentions of the number of "launches". As though we're thinking that a clutch will go within so many launches.

So what is a launch? Are we talking about a launch with some sort of launch control system or just pulling off with all the power you can possibly get to the wheels at the time without using any sort of launch control system?

If its just doing it by yourself can you really burn out a clutch so quickly? Must admit to getting a bit over excited sometimes pulling away from the lights but surely it would need more than 10 of them to totally screw the clutch........?

this i would say fella

The STI clutch is capable of the odd launch without failure, but slipping it is fatal...

P.S. It depends how cheaply you can get a replacement fitted IMHO

f8rdy 04 August 2010 07:48 PM

cheers lads, maybe i should tone it down it bit, i find ive got to slip it a little otherwise i get judder which is apparently common. In all fairness although i do like to piss people off at the lights, ive probably only done one or 2 starts like in that video since ive had it. Mines not STi though, WRX at 265bhp.

Not sure if its ever had a clutch in its 80,000 miles.

My definition is increase revs to mid-point between peak torque and peak bhp and sidestep the clutch (i.e. let it out pretty damn quick). I've only tried it twice, both times on fine, loose gravel to minimise the trauma to the drivetrain. Even on loose stuff, the rate at which my wrx (same as yours) gets going is remarkable and made me laugh out loud. The consequent peppering to the front doors wasn't quite so funny though, so no more launches for now! :lol1:

Sidestepping the clutch sounds like a nice technique, im guessing you get the revs up and then efectively bring your foot off the clutch to the side instead of up?

I guess the spring is a hell of a lot quicker than lifting your foot up.

I might just try that once...... might smooth my flywheel a bit ;)

TonyBurns 04 August 2010 08:27 PM

Side stepping the clutch will just break your gearbox, you bring the clutch up with your foot on in, if your not sympathetic then your car will break :( plus it puts alot of strain on the diffs etc with all that shock going through it.

Tony:)

I suppose your driving style can depend on your disposible income.

If you can afford to get it fixed then push it as hard as you like but if not (like me) then there has to be a compromise somewhere.

It's just the temptation having all that power there like a caged animal!

Launching :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owns-sY2Ou0

Quite fun at the lights, in the wet, when someone wants to try it on, pulling away with all four wheels spinning. :D

hi people,

dont know if this is a stupid question, but how much is it to get launch control..??

cheers
Luke

stevebt 06 August 2010 05:07 PM

I use launch control held at 5000rpm I just dump the clutch and have a big smile as the car drags you about until the 4x4 system kicks in :D

Fulmentaljack3t 06 August 2010 05:13 PM

I have launch control on my car so when you put your foot on the the throttle it will hold at about 4500rpm, i'm **** scared of side stepping the clutch though incase i do some damage so i never use it lol

When i pull away fast from a stand still I find you have to let the clutch out easy and slip it a bit otherwise the car does just judder and then you look a bit silly!

ALi-B 06 August 2010 05:52 PM

A launch is when you get a 0-60 in under 5 seconds ;)

Use about 1 second of clucth slip whilst using full thorttle blips to keep the revs above 4000rpm.

Bit of advice; Side stepping breaks gearboxes and driveshafts, Slipping breaks clutches; Clutches are cheaper and easier to fix than gearboxes. ;)

I've lost count of how many launches my old scoob did, and even though I don't own it anymore, its still going strong.

the info given means nothing unless people give torque hp and clutch used ?!

It's just a case of getting your tuner to arm 1st gear at the pre-set rpm.
I think it's possible on the newage ecu and of course on aftermarket ecu but not sure about the classic

Yeah you need to slip a little to launch it properly.

Sidestepping is for burnouts or drifting.

I know skyline gtsts that have been drifted for years without box rebuilds but it's RWD and AWD is more hard on the drive train.

do a google search for Jolly green monster, Mocom Racing or slow boy racing. they are the decent local one's to you mate:)

tony de wonderful 09 August 2010 09:35 AM

Load up a little on the handbrake for less shock to the drive train.

mervil 09 August 2010 09:41 AM

Here's my launch, pulling the clutch up as quick as my foot will allow :) it's an ACT high torque clutch with the power stated in my signature :thumb:
