Oh dear - soft on crime...

We will get rid of ASBO's and replace it with........... nothing Anyone know what planet she is from, cos it certainly isn't ours. The whole reason why ASBO’s are seen to fail is that there is no punishment to go with them once they are breached. So she’s getting rid of them, crack house closures and 24 hour alcohol licences. So it will be a return to all the problems around the town centres at 2am , drug dens can carry on unhindered and she is wanting us to make youths repair any damage caused. Most of whom I wouldn’t trust to blow a balloon up let alone repair a fence.  |

Until the PC element is extracted from the judiciary and these hooligans are threatened with the sort of punishments which they find really unpleasant, and parents are made responsible financially or otherwise for the actions or any damage caused by their offspring, I don't see how the police have got much of a chance of any lasting success.

Asbo's were a waste of time anyway. Seen as a trophy by scum as a way of impressing friends and chavy girls.
Waste of public money along the way too. |

The problem was the punishment side of it. ASBO's would work so long as any breaches were met with a prison term, or being sent to the middle east.
The good thing about them was that anyone could report an occasion of their anti social behaviour, then we could be anti social to them and their family when we raid their homes at 5 in the morning. The problem was the courts, who will just release them with the same conditions - no punishment. We did have loads of crack house closures during it as well, which are set to go And she has not said what will replace them........ |

We repeatedly hear of people who break their ASBOs and yet nothing particularly bad happens to them. Take for example Caroline Cartwright who after initially breaking a noise abatement notice was given an ASBO in April 2009 which she broke and was "sentenced" to eight weeks in prison suspended for 12 months (i.e. no punishment) and earlier this year she broke the ASBO yet again but this time got a massive twelve weeks in prison suspended for 12 months (i.e. no punishment yet again). Indeed giving her an ice cream might shut the ugly cow up for a while and let the neighbours get some sleep ;) Yes, i know that this isn't a problem that the police can do much about, but it proves that an ASBO is a waste of space a lot of the time :( mb |
