Built by Alpine, IIRC.....

An ex-colleague had one - absolute dog. Heavy despite plastic body, handled like a sofa, went like a not-very-warm hatch, as reliable as new labour, cost £300/service and lost £5000 (50% of purchase price) in 12 months. :(

The successor A610 was a stunner though "The french 911" as most car mags dubbed it.

lol just the engine , its an absolute monster!

Mike Tuckwood 02 April 2002 09:56 PM

Gary, there must have been something wrong with your mates car then, because the one I owned for 3 years was an absolute belter!

Fast, light, very sharp, didn't handle like a rear engined car at all, a bit dated inside and quite quirky but Bl00dy fast.

Quite rare and hold their prices well now, only a couple of thousand GTA turbo's were bought into the UK.

So good in fact that I bought the (Yellow), A610 afterwards, (Only around 50 of these in the UK), so financially this was the best car I ever had or probably ever will, depreciation after 3 years was a stunning £500.00! :p

what bhp level

Mike Tuckwood 03 April 2002 10:43 AM

The GTA was circa 260ish bhp (superchipped) :o, the A610 was around 290 bhp.

I've only heard good about these. Get the right one and you can run it for the cost of a new mondeo.

In about 1992 I had a Manta GTE which wasnt very fast, in the Mcr Airport Tunnel on the way to my girlfriends house an A610 blasted past (I was doing 70) and he cut in and turned left down the country lanes (same way I was going), he let me catch up and then floored it, quick car, well quicker than a Manta GTE anyway, Round the twisty bits (if you know it round there you know how twisty) I hung on gamely because I knew it so well, however it got to the uphill bit and the wheezy old Manta was no match, he blasted up the hill out of my sight, I thought, goodbye end of story, see ya mate.

No

I got to the top of the hill and saw the front of a car pointing towards me out of the hedge, headlamps pointing skyward. I stopped and asked if the guy wanted help, he was a bit snappy and trying to call somebody on his mobile so off I went being glad that I was fully aware that the local farmer was fond of dragging 50 or so large sloppy Arsed Cows across the road at the top of the hill. Never saw it again !

Ouch, can happen to any of us though? :o

GaryC 06 April 2002 07:40 AM

A610 was a cracker, but the GTA :(

His was standard (not superchipped) so only 210-ish bhp, and weighed well over 1300kg which for a 10 year old car made of plastic is a lot! - must be the two leather armchairs instead of front seats ;)

Bought it August 2000 from Adrian Piers (GTA/A610 specialist) for £9500, sold Aug 2001 (px for a new Celica 190) for £4500. His was a dog, but maybe it was just 'his'?

Its Aidan Piers, have been past there quite a lot and they do seem to have a thing for them, everything in there seems well overpriced though !
